Ok, I'm Building a 455 Buick. actually a 74' block,Stage 1 cast Iron Heads, .030 overbore, new forged pistons, Chromeolly rings, Heads New Stage 1 valves, Springs, New Comp Cam(TorqueMaster)110degree, 800 cfm Rochester Quadrajet(I'm not positive on CFM#) Polished stock crank, Everything is new on Engine..... Just curious what kinda performance I can Expect...... Also figured this would be the place to ask, Does anyone have any figures on How Buick compares to other engines, say Performance wise, Buick 455 vs. 454, Buick 455 vs. pontiac 455 etc.... Stock #'s HP and Torque would be cool to see, Make for better arguement.. of corse most arguments regarding the buick can be better settled with a doubtfull passanger and a bad case of wiplash...hahaha...
Per Motor Trend mag. the 70 Stage 1 posted the fastest quarter mile time for a 4 seater in the muscle car era ----13.38 sec. right off the show room floor. No the street Hemi was not faster. As I recall the LS6 and 440 six packs were the closest behind.
Here's a popular list of the 50 fastest production cars of the era: http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/general/musclecars-50fast.shtml My Desktop Dyno says that with a dual plane intake, assuming 9.5 to 1 true compression ratio and using Comp Cams 268H's numbers, you should make about 425 HP at 5000 rpm's and 507 ft/lbs of torque at 3500 rpm's.
I thought the question was only about the engine, but here goes: "Waiting to do battle: a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS-454 LS-6, a 1970 426 Plymouth Hemicuda, a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air 409, a tri-power 1965 Pontiac GTO, a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 SCJ, a 1974 Pontiac Trans Am SD-455, a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30, a 1970 Buick GS-455 Stage 1 and-just for kicks-a 1987 Buick Regal T-Type, twin to the famed Grand National, the ultimate musclecar from the time of junk-bond kings and leg warmers." For fear of reopening the old debate Erik's article is comparing cars that had been modified. The other 50 fastest article carries tests from various mags with no uniformity of either the testing, who tested, tweaked , where tested and I think but am unsure no mods. Motor Trend I think did all their testing of cars off the floor and compiled their own list.
Good pointing that out again, Jim. But it still is good reading :TU: And let's be honest about it: David's engine isn't completely stock as well :3gears:
Just trying to get some common baseline going to compare the cars performance. I admit that it is difficult and a nonexact science. It is still is worth while to try to do the best possible. Obviously, it is more difficult, if not impossible, to try to compare modified engines. With real top power engines the inherent weakness in the Buick 455 light casted block will cause it to fall short most of the time. On the other hand in the real world of streetable pump gas engines the 455 stands tall. If you do not have the Motor Trend list I wll be glad to post it and/ or get you to repost.
I saw that after I posted and quickly deleted it .... trying not to look like an idiot :error: . Oh well, I failed.........You guys are just too quick...... My bad.......... Lon
Sorry Lon, I will delete my previous post, you delete yours and I will delete this one after that...... :bglasses:
Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever done a recent comparison like the Car Craft article but with small blocks? I'd like to know how the Buick 350 stands up against other GM 350's as well as Mopar and Ford blocks.
