From Sloan..."If you want us to search your VIN, I will need a check mailed to the address below, or you can call or email me with a Visa or MasterCard number."

This is a very nice feature. I even received the documentation the same day on one occasion.

I have worked with the folks at Sloan on a few items and they have always been top notch. They can be a little slow to respond if they are busy but they will do the best they can for you. I really believe the care about service.

The Sloan folks are great to work with. They had the docs on my 315 HP/350 Sportwagon. They confirmed what options it had and enclosed info on a car order form so you know what all the codes stand for. (woohoo, rallye steering wheel!)

They got it too me quickly, too.

Re: DUANE Build Sheet, Sloan Documentation, or Both?

thought id jump in, you guys seen know your stuff. i posted a thread with a couple of question . i have (actually going to buy) a 1971 gs stage 1 and have kbnow about the car for years do not believe its been messed with, however it has the vin stamp in the 1970 location(on block deck ) instead of the front of the block like most 1971 car? anyone heard of this ?
where is the block cast date on a 1971 455 so i can check to make sure it predated the data plate build date.
anyway to make sure the block is correct stage block (cast on part numbers) where are they on a 1971 455 ?
anythink new on 1971 documentation ??

If you have an early 71 block with the #1231738 cast on the back the date code will be on the front of the block. Facing the front of the motor look just above the water pump on the left(facing front of car) The letter for the month and number for the day will be cast here on the flat ridge. Like B15 which is Feb, 15. If you have later 71 cast block with #1238861on the back the date code is inside near the lifter galley and intake needs to be off to see it. What is car build date???

Also, do you know about TS code under 5 and 7 spark plugs? Should have 7041242 carb, 1112016 distributor, and if auotmatic should have ow code trans if early car or BB code trans if later. VIN is stamped on trans as well on drivers side for auto and I think 4 spd as well. Auto trans with VIN is the most important factor in verification of 71 Stage-1. If thsi stuff is missing ask questions. Also look behind fenders through door opening at the bacl of the emblems. A real Stage-1 emblem has pegs spaced about 5" apart. LAter ones were about 2" apart and may have been added by someone.

In 1970 BOTH the Leeds plant in Kansas City,MO., and the BOP plant about 10 miles away in Kansas City,Kansas built the Skylark.

    Hi Duane
The VIN stamping between #1&3 spark plugs an the 70's should entail the last digits of the VIN plus the H (if its flint) and 0 for the year then ,and heres my question, a 7? for the last digit of the model. Is this correct or should it have a different #. In other words
    70H344875 ?
    thanks for your help.

    Gary,
I believe the partial vin number on a 70 block would be (in your instance)
    40H344875 and not "70H344875"

There are other things to check, such as the date code and part number that are cast into the block, plus other info as well.

Are the heads off the motor so you can see the entire block/head mating surfaces?

Why are 71 GSX or stage 1 so hard to document?

Because there are no microfilm records available. That means if you do not have a buildsheet you cannot prove a 71 car is a GSX. (Except for the few cars out there with original paint.)

It also means that unless you have the original date coded components, or a buildsheet, you cannot prove a 71 is a stage 1.
