I'm not sure you could use 454 pistons in a 430 motor.......yes you could make the bore fit, yes you can buy chevy rods and modify the crank to fit them.....yes the rods and pistons are cheaper......but I think the compression height isn't close, not to mention the valve arrangement is not the same. Plus most chevy heads are well over 100 cc chambers so the pistons have a dome that just wont work in our motors
I still think the compression height I several hundredths off. I think BBC are 1.6xx . Buicks off the shelf stuff is 1.98ish but new design is higher the save decking blocks with heights going over 2" so if not careful you might end up more than .300 in the hole
There might be a rod selection that allows or correct the piston height........but I still think the valve notches will be all wrong. On a 454 if we start at the front of the head and go back. You go exhaust/intake, exhaust/intake, exhaust/intake, exhaust/intake. On a big buick it goes exhaust/intake, intake/exhaust, exhaust/intake, intake/exhaust 454 flats only have 1 little notch for the intake. And given the location of the center valves in a big chevy it wont be in the correct location But good thinking outside the box
You guys are veeery knowledgeable, that's really impressive. The reason I wanted to go with EDL heads or chevy pistons rods was this build : https://www.powernationtv.com/episode/EP2016-17/big-bad-buick However I wasn't aware the 430 wasn't exacly square. And of course, it is indeed more logical to support TA with all the work they put in their products every single year for the Buick community.
Initially, the 470 was built with BBC Eagle 6.8" rods. The pistons are custom Diamond pistons. Now we have drop in rods and Autotec piston choices. This is a .063 over 430 ( 4.250" bore) with the Eagle rods and a 3.95" stroke. http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/new-buildup-448ci-stg-2-se-hyd-roller-an-mpg-motor.252771/ If you build the 430 with a 4.050" stroke using the 482 rods and 4.250" bore, you'll have 460 cubic inches, http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/482-rods-now-available.324448/ http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/your-new-diamond-pistons.181425/ http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/new-470-482-piston-options.324745/
Good morning guys, Has someone ever fitted non stage 2 headers on stage 2 heads ? A fellow member is selling stage 2 heads and I am considering buying them, however I currently have Doug's performance headers which are 1 7/8" and I know there's no way they will directly bolt on. Has someone ever machined an adapter of some kind to bolt on the head and shime between the head and the headers ? I have the feeling I have ever saw that.
Can't work, stage2 exhaust angle of the head is way diffrerent where the header bolts on.You can actually touch the exhaust valve with your finger the port is layed back so much.Plus the port is round not rectangular.
As far as I know there has only been talk about mating Stage 2 heads to Stage 1 type headers. It just doesn't make sense. The Stage 2 has a round port where the Stage 1 is a rectangle port. I'm sure it could be done but it would be like building custom headers. Might be better to sell the Doug's and then buy a set of Stage 2's. No sense in trying to redesign the wheel, but I do understand trying to use what you have.
Thanks for the reply, I had the feeling I did saw someone mocking up something for stage 2 heads and non stage 2 headers but I must be daydreaming. If i'm going with stage 2 heads the logical thing would obvisouly to get rid of the doug's headers and find a set of stage 2 headers.
Here ya go, stg 2 headers. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/new-455-“stage-2-headers”.350576/
