My wife would like to paint the bumper's on the '69 to match the car I'm a bit against it but since my bumpers would need rechroming anyhow it seems like the most obvious choice. I have been however trying to convince her it might be ok to paint and airbrush them to LOOK like a chrome bumper. Thoughts? Experiences? Let me know. -Chris
I seriously thought about doing this to my 72 Skylark which I am in the process of having painted. I am going to paint the car black and thought black bumpers would be cool. I still do think it would look cool but in the end decided to buck up and have them rechromed. It's getting very expensive ($375 per locally) but I think if you ever plan on selling the car nice chrome will be a much better selling point. If I was going to go with the body color I would look into having them powdercoated it's a very durable finish from what I understand. It's also much more affordable than chrome.
NO WAY. This is one of the things that set our classics apart from the average Jelly Bean shaped S#@* boxes Hurtling down the highway. Leave the painted bumpers for th Tauruses and Camrys.
I was thinking about painting the bumpers to match the body but chrome looks so much better IMO. Rechroming prices are up there but in the end I think it is worth it.
I don't think I would. I have seen black, red, and Bamboo Creme painted bumpers and I find that I really don't care for the look. just my .02 :beer
There is a paint company called ALSA out of vernon , Ca. www.alsacorp.com they make a paint called "mirra chrome" looks just like chrome. thats what they painted that NAPA chrome truck in commercial with OCC guys. Their colors and products make House of kolor products look lame! I'm going to buy the fiberglass bumpers for my 68' and have them done that way.
Hmmm?! I checked out that site that has chrome paint and I think that may be the way to go! I'm goign to put a glass bumper o nthe front and keep the stock metal bumper on the back. So this seems the way to go, has anyone used it before? and if so got pics? -Chris
Ya...Paint the bumpers "ICK" and... Ya...Paint the bumpers and the interior and the wheels and tires and the engine compartment, and don't forget the trunk and under carriage too! From one Nelson to another... Don't paint those bumpers no matter what your wife said! ou: Chrome dem bumpers! Eric :3gears:
Jeez, don't you know anything? You chrome the interior of the car. Sheesh. I'd say check out the 68-69 Members Ride's thread. There's a black 69 with painted bumpers. That way you have an idea. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=57147&page=5&pp=25
Go for it. I think paint looks good. Everyone and their brother has chrome bumpers. Make your car stand out. Maybe you can photoshop a pic of your car to get a preview of what painted bumpers look like. Just an idea. Post pics when youre done, whatever you choose.
Went out about a decade before that. I had a 63 Impala SS with painted fiberglass bumpers in the 70s, and hated the look of it after about 1 season of racing. I put the chrome originals back on after all the local tracks closed. Looked much better. Mark
Mark's right...it was the rage in the mid '80's and it's all you saw in Car Craft & Hot Rod. I had two friends who had me do theirs because they couldn't afford chrome, and hey; it was "cool". That was then. Devon
