Yup..... $1200 (+/-) per bumper seems to be the going rate these days.

Librandi did front and rear for a 70. $2600 all together. The rear needed a pretty good amount of work.

As of this morning, Sandy's Bumper Mart is roughly $720 each for 70 GS bumpers, subject to inspection of course. I'm 10 minutes away from there, and they do good work.

Are you guys shipping bumpers or having to transport them yourselves?

I use Sandy's for my bumpers. A few of the Mass guys sent down ~ 15 bumpers (maybe it was 20???) , and Sandy's cut us a 15% discount. It's worth the 5 or so hour drive each way...

Tri-city say's a pair of '69 skylark bumper are $2500.00 " if they're in good shape" Someone posted on FB that custom metal finishing is $4200.00 for "show chrome " they no longer do "street chrome" for $2000.

Was just quoted 2800-3000 for a 72 buick GS rear bumper from Advanced Plating. So roughly 6k for front and rear. Ouch!!
waiting to hear back from Sandy's
Any other Reputable shops out there?

    Sandy's will be less.

I get a qty. discount & make regular runs there (saving on shipping/transportation) depending upon where you're located (I'm near Baltimore). Also 8% sales tax there. Basically I make it to where it's no more expensive going through me than if someone handles it themselves assuming it's convenient to get me the cores. I'll also pick up/deliver too if it's w/in my travels &/or event attendance.

Figure about $850-$900 ea. unless the core needs excessive straightening.

I have a '72 front up there now that I'll be selling & a '72 rear core here that I didn't take last time. I also take core trade-ins/exchange.

I can’t get over how expensive some services have gotten the past 30 years!

I had a set of bumpers done in Oregon. Ran me $4000 for both of them. Didn't need much straightening but there was a crack that needed welding in one.

I went thru Starbrite Metal finishing. He does all the prep work and I think he has somebody in Ogden do the final chrome plate.

OK, this is what I want to know today, how does those bumpers holding out years after the plating is done. My luck, like the ones on my 71, they looked great until 3 to 4 years later when they started whitening out on certain spots or sections. So, now 3 years have gone by, who's bumper still looks as nice as like the day they got it.

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

The best results will happen with proper "triple" plating where complete stripping to bare steel, proper prep to address pitting, cracks and other compromised areas of the steel, then etching bath followed with as many trips to the copper plating tank, and polishing to provide the smoothest surface, then nickel plating tank to "silver" the bumper, and then the hexavalent chromium plating tank for the chrome.

The "two" plate process, is typically the first part prep, but no copper strike is done, only nickel, once or twice, buffed/polished and then trivalent chrome, and not hexavalent chrome plate applied.

Copper is a noble metal and is best for the plate on steel and the layer to support nickel and superior than nickel on steel, for resistance to corrosion or detrimental interaction with steel.

Hexavalent chrome is superior on the molecular level in plating to nickel than trivalent chrome, is "harder", resisting corrosion and lifting of the plated nickel.

And the "color" (hue) of Hexavalent chrome finish is "cooler" (more blue) than trivalent chrome "warmer" (more yellow), and sometimes the latter is obvious when compared or on a car with original chrome. This is due to the properties of transmission of light through each of the types of chromium, and thickness applied as the layer is transparent.

The cost of dealing with hexavalent removal from process for disposal is greater and different than with trivalent chrome, the added expense of copper and work, as well as higher energy requirements for the plating process of hexavalent chrome.

Bottom line. It's more expensive due to environmental concerns and regulation compliance.

(Worked at place that did hex chrome in the 70s)

Im in Miami Fl. I will end up sending my N25 & Ft bumpers to them. I just got off the phone with Alex over at Sandy's and he said the rear bumper would run around 750. shipping is going to run around 150. FedEx / UPS. so I figure that times 2 for Ft & Rr.
Now I dont know if thats their show chrome or cheapy chrome

Polishing the bumpers as time goes by gives longer chrome life. =)

That's their "street chrome." About double that for "show chrome." I'd recommend going to some body ships & see if you can score a couple boxes. If you want, I get good UPS rates get me weight/dimensions & I'll get you a price on shipping.

OR if you want to get them to one of the FL guys going to BG, I can take them on my next run & ship them back to you when done or maybe can find them a ride to FL.
