Thanks but I already went through the sleeping bag, tent, motorhome, and motel phases of life.

I have had pretty much the same experience as Jim. If I was crazy enough to purchase a travel trailer, - it would be an Airstream. BTW: Here in SW Florida I have found a home that has two Airstream RVs. I didn't know that Airstream even made RVs. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow if I have time.

John, there are a few of those Airstream RV's in the Netherlands.
I was really suprised to see them.
    Here's a 1986 model:

Also, Airstream teamed up with Oldsmobile to build the ultimate FWD Toronado RV:

Here's the photo. I don't know anything about these, but they must run. They are not always parked in the same spots.

Those would be Ultra Vans set on a Corvair chassis.

Airstream 101 (Re: Buy a 1956 Airstream Bubble)

Dear Jim, John, Tim, Erik, and V-8 RV observers,

Thanks for your thoughts. It was most a gag posting, but I figured you'all might enjoy the ad.

Well, that is true. However, you need to take into consideration what you are getting your hands on. It is after all a house on wheels. That means it has everything a house has and a lot of what a car has (a trailer more exactly.) Have any of you had a bathroom or kitchen remodel lately? This little trailer has had both and a whole lot more work done to it. Even so, it is a lot less expensive than a new Airstream.

This particular example hasn't been restored so much as modernized. In the 1950s trailers didn't have things like grey and black water tanks, modern electrical and so on. If you want to "rough it" in a Airstream that has been maintained but not modernized, there plenty of those for sale too and they cost much less:

Actually, I've been looking obviously and I'm realizing that if you want one that looks reasonable behind your car, it is best to get one built around the time your car was built or later. Just as cars of the 50s look noticably different from cars of the 60s, even the travel trailers have the same differences (if not as extreme.)

Well, Airstream has a reputation for being among the best, and after all, Erik you find Buicks in your corner of the globe too! :)

Cute!! Thanks Erik! I didn't think you could find so many images even on the Internet. Kind of surprising that so many of those images seem to feature 1950s Buicks. I'm thinking that trying to do this with a 1960s Buick is next to impossible - these guys sure a glutton for punishment!!

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

I remember seeing an article in MECHANIX ILLUSTRATED by the great Tom McCahill about towing an Airstream. The article said that if Airstream did the complete hitch installation, that they would guarantee that the trailer would tow without any problems up to 100 mph. Obviously, the "hitch installation" would include any tire and suspension upgrades that they felt were necessary. I assume that they meant by any car with enough ponies to get the thing to 100. This article appeared somewhere around 1960, so there were a number of cars with plenty of horses.

How does that coupler lock onto the hitch ball? Looks like it just rests and floats on top of the ball.
I see a clevis pin hanging there, but nothing it would lock into. What am I missing here?

Nice camper though. It would be great to have, '58 Buick or not.

That's a bulldog coupler, it sits on the ball and a sleeve moves forward to enclose the coupler then pinned.

    Learn something new everyday.:Smarty:
Seeing the picture, thought it was some antiquated coupler that should have been replaced with a modern unit long ago.
