I have searched the site for intake help and the opinions seem to be as varied as the different set ups that people are using them for. I guess the best way to ask is to give you my Build and purposes for the car. 1971 Skylark with 72 stage 1 Engine and Heads Mild head work (3 angle, swirled valves) 9:5 to 9:8 to 1 compression hypeurtectic pistons Headers 835 cfm edelbrock q-jet pertronix ignition w/ msd 6al box t-350 trans w/ 700r4 sprag, hardened 2nd sprag, shift kit 2300 to 2500 stall convertor Has the 2 something peg leg gears going to 3.42 or 3.55 posi in 8.5" 10 bolt Purposes:  Street and 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile tracks here in North Central Al. I want the best intake for my setup all around not something that only comes in @ High rpm but something that also still pulls well higher up the band. Is there such an animal. Let me know...
If you are staying with the stock stage 1 cam, then I would recommend the Edelbrock B4B intake for your application. :TU:
Cam Choice I am using the C113 cam. Says about 20 to 25 horse over stock cam.. will it make a difference there?????
When I went to TA, I mean I went to the shop in Scottsdale, they asked me what rpm range I was looking for performance in. They suggested the Edelbrock over their own SP1. Now I was looking for low to mid rpm increases. They said if you are looking for 3500+ increases, then the SP1 is what you want. Call them and ask them. They are helpful.
The SP1 is definitely the intake you want, if you need your engine to make peak HP above 4000 rpm. If it's going to be a mostly street driven car that will rarely see above 5500 rpm, then the Performer or B4B is the intake you'd probably be happier with. The dual plane actually will give you more torque at lower rpm's. You could also have Gessler port one for you. There is a thread on the new B4B, and part of the discussion is the HP differences between stock intakes, Performers, B4B's, and SP1. Very informative. You'll probably buy one anyway but I've said this before.......Unless you're beyond 525-550 HP you won't benefit much,If at all,By going away from the stock intake...... I tested a stock iron manifold VS a B4b at the track and on back to back runs they were the same on a 5500RPM,Low 12 sec.,full weight car. Money is better spent elsewhere....... There are a few Buick's in NHRA Stock classes dipping into the 10's with iron intakes,Not to mention Gessler's car.
Stock Iron Intake Has anyone else had similiar results in warmed over 455's between stock iron intakes and aluminum. If there isn't much difference in performance, I would rather spend that money for headers or a better converter
Having gone through 3 different intakes (stock,Performer,SP1), I'd have to say that you'd probably get your most bang for the buck by having a converter custom made to your car. A company like Edgeracingconverters.com does this. They have almost 100 different combinations based on your car's characteristics. It will cost about $450 delivered, but I picked up over .3 with a converter swap. I don't think you'll get that with an intake change. Just my $.02.
I've always picked up .1 to .15 with a Performer or B4B IF the jets are changed. (my Greg Tomlinson ported and equalized B4B was worth .25 over stock.....where is that boy Tomlinson anyway?) You will often go slower if stock jets are left in. On a Qjet going up .003 on the primaries is a good start. Bruce
