Buying and Selling a VIN tag

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by BamaWildcat, Nov 19, 2003.

  1. This might belong in eBay parts, but I think it deserves a little more attention. This is the kind of thing that causes future car owners to pull their hair out when things don't match up right with a car after someone has toyed with the VIN. Anyone want to see something illegal? I recommend we all e-mail the seller.

"FOR AUCTION IS THE TITLE TO THE VEHICLE I JUST PARTED OUT HERE ON EBAY. THE TITLE IS CLEAR AND SIGNED BY THE REGISTERED OWNER. WHAT YOU GET IS THE TITLE, AND THE STAINLESS I.D. TAG THE CAR CAME WITH. THE CAR WAS A 1964 BUICK RIVIERA. SOLD AS NESTALGIA ONLY. Also, Comes with the Aluminum tag that states model and year, with paint codes and so on. (model 64-4747) Etc..."

I parted out my old 76 Honda CJ360T motorcycle about a year ago.
When I was done, I was about to toss the frame in the dumpster when I thought, what the heck, maybe someone will want it.
Afterall, it was straight and very clean.

So I stuck the full frame on eBay with the title for $5
Only a couple hours had passed when I got an email from ebay warning me that that was illegal, and they pulled my auction, and if I ever tried it again I'd be banned from ebay.

I've been on both sides of this issue, being in California Vin Tags and titles pre-73 are a commodity, a pre-73 car requires no smog or saftey type inspections at all. I purchase a 72 Landcruiser vin tag and title only (after verifying that the donor vehicle was turned into an offroad only rig) and used it to register my BigBlock Chevy 76 Landcruiser, and if in that situation I'd do it again.
I also own a 68 GS400 (parts car) that I've cut up for quarters and sold off a the entire front end, I still have the matching numbers engine, trans and rear end, title, trim and vin tags. I know there's guys out there with 68 Skylarks that would love to clone a gs and this would be way to do it with conviction.
Should I just scrap the documentation with the car? Thankfully I'm not ready to be rid of it so I can put that off for awhile.

Did you notice how he spelled "tytle" in the heading. All he needs is a "X" code motor to go with it. And why does he need nailhead in the heading except for search manipulation. All of what he is selling in this listing is banned on ebay. Then again, so was the R12 I got this summer.

    Switching vin tages

If you use a vin tag of a buick GS on a honda civic, is it now a GS? NO IT IS STILL A CIVIC!!!! People that do this are money driven. It's no different then restamping parts or blocks to make them numbers matching   :spank: :spank:

May be useful in bringing an undocumented '64 Riviera back from the brink of oblivion.

Pulling my hair out isn't necessary.

Right now in my dilemma, my hair is falling out.
Selling a car with an altered VIN tag is FRAUD, a class C Felony in Indiana. Shortly, a seller in Michigan will be able to vouch for that!
