Does anyone remember when radio was radio? I'm not talking about the commercialized stuff you listen to nowadays,I'm talking about the innocent era of the classic sounds of radio: the famous DJ's,the famous radio stations that made a name for themselves and started their reputations. The DJ's I'm talking about are: Al Michaels,Dan Ingram,Wolfman Jack,Bruce"Cousin Brucie"Morrow,John "Records"Landecker,Larry LuJack,Don Imus,Michael Sarzinski,Harry Harrison-just to name a few personalities. The radio stations that had these DJ's have gone from music to talk radio. These are:WABC,WNBC (New York),WLS and WCFL(Chicago). I've only named these stations because these are the stations I listened to. Anyone out there that remembers their favorite radio station and favorite DJ?(and I'm not talking about talk show people like Howard Stern)
Boy did I spend hours listening to WABC & WNBC playing in my basement growing up. I recall the afternoon newscasts including Howard Cosell 'speaking of sports'. There's some neat stuff here that'll bring back memories: http://airchexx.com/
Radio! In the early 60's I remember listening to WLS and all the adds from Mr. Norm. Used to listen every night on my 6 transistor pocket radio. It was neat! Jim N.
Back in the 70's, tuning into Radio Luxembourg, broadcasting in English during the nights. Listening to shows with wonderful names like "You, the night, the music and your radio.....", with my little AM transistor radio hidden under the blankets and a plastic mono earpiece......Those were the radio days :TU:
Yeah I loved the old radio, WRIF( JJ and the morning crew, with Dick the bruiser and Artur P, BABY) WDRQ WLLZ WABX . What about morning radio? Last time I was in Detroit all that was on in the morning was yak, yak, yak. If I wanted yak I would change to AM. Tim
The Wolfman Jack Show was one of my favorite shows here on Sunday nights. Another on a station in Omaha was The Adventures of Chicken Man. Even here in Nebraska I could pick WLS in Chicago(AM radio).
CHICKEN MAAAAAANNNNNN! Dannel George Miller use to play that every day on Cook radio back in the early 80's but Miller has been around Billings from about 1955! He is still here and is on every Sat. Morning on the oldies station playing everything from CCR's Cotton fields to the Baby elephant walk. ou:
KB Radio A lot of great memories of WKBW, a 50,000 watt powerhouse out of Buffalo. Heard up and down the east coast and Canada. Many, many great DJs...my favorite....Tom Shannon.
There are a lot of reasons radio has changes, and often not for the best. As somebody in the business I can tell you that the old days are long gone. And it goes like this. Once upon a time, the radio industry was basically plain old fun, sure it was never like WKRP made it look to be, but it was all about the fun. Then you get the government involved, big business, and the whole thing goes straight down the crapper. Local radio can be done, at a profit, but not a lot of companies want that, it's all about the bottom line. If you're looking for how radio actually works.. read www.krud.com
Korrie, Did you ever listen to Radio Luxembourg ? They had special programs for Dutch people living in N-America, and were broadcasting with 1,300,000 Watts. Click on this link and listen to the Nightly closedown in the 80s (Bob Stewart) jingle in the Station of the 80's jingles section. Maybe it will bring back some memories :TU:
While not as old as some of the stations posted, I like the short-lived Z-Rock, and the now internet only KNAC (though I only listened to it once on vacation, as I live in the Wxxx radio area). I do remember WMMS in Cleveland when they were an "album" station.
Sorry Erik but never listened to this station. "Bad Dutchman" I know! Nice jingles though...thanks for the link. Another great station was 1050 CHUM in Toronto. Used a CHUMometer to let you know the temp. Back when Farenheit was still in vogue in Canada.
Korrie, When did they change over to the standard of the world ? Even England has changed over to metric, and the USA will do so in the future, but they just don't want to admit they have to.......  Funny thing is that when you go from LA to San Fransico along the coast road by car, you see road signs in KM's :TU:
Canada changed to metric in the mid 70's ('74, I believe). It sure was not an ez "conversion" for most. But, we are in touch with the rest of the world.
It's amazing how quick you will adapt to a new situation. We changed from Guilders to Euros a couple of years ago, and nobody says Guilder anymore by mistake.
i remember the BIG 8, 1950's & 60ss, ckwl out of windsor ontario, the #1 radio station in north america. if your record was not selected to be played in radio 80, then it probably did not play anywhere else. i remember tommy shannon , ron knolls, joe van all at ckwl . motown ! then the crtc & fm destoyed the station & in a few short years the big 8 was no more !
Yup-back in the late 60's WLS-Chicago was along on long overnight driving trips from Mpls-Denver. It was great and about the only option in Nebraska at night-everything else had signed off!
When I was in Phoenix, AZ in 1987 I listened to Wolfman Jack on the radio. I cant remember the station but I still have some cassettes that I recorded from then. Its still a pleasure to listen to them. I think you have the best radio in the US, radio here in Sweden dont even come close - not even today.
I think that says more about the poor quality of Swedish radio.... But that Power Big Meet radio station, only on air during this meeting, sure rocks !!!!
Youre probably right about that Erik. Are you coming to Power Meet this year? If you do it would be nice to meet you.
