Ok, Im finally degreeing my cam. Im following the directions off of Yardley's site. My only problem is that first time around the degree wheel said 30 degrees, second was 45 degrees, do the math and come up with 7.5. So I rotated the degree wheel to 38.5 degrees.

If I understand the directions correctly, once I rotate the engine in the other direction the pointer should be pointing at 38.5 degrees??? But every time I do it it points to 15 degrees...:Do No: :Do No: ...

    I am officaly lost!!!:Dou: :Dou:

I accessories, intake, and valvetrain has been completely removed, and Im rotating the engine off the flex plate....

    HELP.... PLEASE:ball: :ball: :ball:

Hi Michael. Did you install the cam with the marks on the gears lining up?

    Jeff,
I think he's just trying to find TDC right now.
    Michael,
It can get tedious finding TDC, but it's cructial to the procedure, be sure your piston stop is locked in place and not moving on you.
It took me about three shots of adjusting the wheel to get it to hit the same number going both directions. Is there a chance you moved the wheel the wrong direction?

Can anyone resize a pic for me and then I'll go into greater detail, the pic is just under a Gig, 904 megs to be exact...

    Jeff & Len,

Here it goes. I have aligned the two dots on the timing gears (Roll Master set). The dot I used on the crank gear is the one marked in black marker. I purchased a degree kit from Summit.

Once the gears/chain are installed, Im setting the degree wheel at 0. Then rotate the crank clockwise until #1 piston hits the piston stop. Once it hits the stop I rotate the crank back (counter clockwise) and back off the piston stop 1/2 or 1 turn, and repeat above until #1 piston misses the stop, rotate the engine back, turn the stop back in until the piston meets the stop.

I take my inital reading. Turn the engine counter clockwise, until it hits the stop going backwards. Take reading. Subtrack bigger # (2nd reading) from 1st reading and divide by 2. Take that # and rotate the degree wheel said # of degrees (towards 0).

Then rotate engine clockwise until piston hits stop. This # should match what last setting was, but it never does!!! :Do No:

What am I doing wrong:Do No: :Do No: :Do No: ???

Thanks to Todd Cole for the resize of picture....

Where's your pointer mounted, it needs to be a fixed position on the block? No reason that this shouldn't be working unless that piston stop is moving, and then it would only be a degree or two.

Wrong dot? Shouldn't the outer dot on the crank gear align with the dot on the cam gear?

Pointer is mounted in the lower driverside water pump/t-cover bolt hole....

Yep, The inner dot goes to the crank keyway, its a few degrees off center, the outer dot is to match up with the cam dot.

Dots are aligned but look at the degree wheel, I had to rotate the engine backward to get TDC... :Do No: :Do No:

OK, since Len is not home, hopefully someone else can answer my ??? Im trying to find TDC. Now, when I rotate the crank Im at 3 degrees ATDC and 3 degrees BTDC. Should I Zero the degree wheel and moce on or when the directions say the same spot on the degree wheel they MEAN the same spot... ie 3 degree ATDC...

    Thanks Michael

    ????

Sounds like you've already found TDC.

Well I almost had it, and then decided to advance the cam. On Dr. Weise's advise it needed to be installed between 112-114. It came up at 106. Well I moved the crank gear clockwise to 8 and re-installed, and re degreed. And then I finally understood what the small #'s on the degree wheel are for... Im such a DORK... So, tomorrow morning I will fix my piston stop and start all over... I keep bending the 3/8ths bolt...

Sorry Mike, I went out to the Escondido Cruise Night after we talked (gotta get some bang for my buck).
Some of the piston stops are pretty flimsy, I bent the one I used a bit but you should be able to get it within a degree. Don't be afraid to screw the stop well down into the chamber, it will give you a larger spread in the numbers intially but you'll see that come together as you zero the wheel.
None of the rest of the procedure will work if you don't have the right tdc.

And based on your info above 3atdc and 3btdc you have a zero'd wheel. Congratulations.
