whats up guys i have never been in this part of the forum, but i am having a problem with my lights, if i hit my brake lights they will come on but as far as the regular lights they don't work in the front and back. (if i turn my blinker on they will work)

I had a problem similar to this, it was so wierd I figured it had to be something really obscure. Turned out to just be one or both of the blinker fuses were bad. Replace them, and see if that doesn't fix the problem. If I remember right, my problem was that the blinkers wouldn't work unless I had the brakes on, and the flashers stayed solid unless I had the brakes on. Something dumb like that. Sounds like a similar problem, might be worth a shot.

first off.....check your taillight/parking light fuse .... the fuse filiment might even look good but could be blown/broken.

    do your dash lights work?

check the fuseable link near the starter. there should be 2 there and one is for the headlights.

also check your brights switch. (mine will have the headlights turn off sometimes unexpectedly but if I push near the bright switch it kicks back on. though I dont know if my parking lights part of it either though.

before you start chasing your tail(lights)...
this is how most older gm cars are wired for the taillights. this picture is for a 1974 "A" body.... probably is EXTREMELY similar to yours.

the main power feed (green arrow) flows from a fused link to the fuseblock and connects to a distribution bar (orange rectangle) on the backside made into the back side of the fuseblock. this bar lets power flow through fuses to several circuits, the taillights being one of them. if your car car start and run, it most likely will NOT be a fused link problem since the same fused link is the source taillights and almost everything else in the car except the headlights.

after the power passes through the taillight fuse it goes (blue arrow) to the headlight switch.
inside the headlight switch, when you turn your parking or headlights on, this wire is split to the taillights (one of the red arrows) wire AND to the dash light "dimmer" rheostat. after passing through the rheostat, the instrurment panel fuse feed wire (red arrows) runs back over to the fuseblock's "inst pnl" fuse and after passing through that fuse goes to light all the bulbs in your dash that are "dim-able" by turning the headlight switch's knob.

so if the taillight fuse were to be defective/blown/broken, it will also keep the dash lights from working. it would not matter that the inst pnl fuse was good since it wouldnt be gettin the power from the taillight fuse in the first place.
if the taillight fuse IS good and there is power to and through it, you might have a bad connection inside of your headlight switch or a broken wire between your headlight switch and the taillight fuse.
