So does anyone believe that this was realy douglas glad? He hasn't been on the forum since his second post.

I'm not saying it isn't, but there's always a chance that someone is having some fun.

Thank You Douglas for the interest in our Buicks and motors. I like the idea of the E-85 as that may be were we are all headed!

Also note that GSCA has been doing dyno test results in their newsletter on several builds at the Widlcat shop.

    Thanks - Bill

    NO!!!!!

Do not let anyone know about our secret!!! :blast: :blast:

I want to keep beating up on unsuspecting Chevy and Ford owners.

Why would we want the uninlightened to know about our secret? It would keep them from making fools out of themselfs when they get to talking trash about the slow grandma's ride. :3gears:

Man! If this keeps up I will never get to have any fun with unsuspecting brand X'ers.

Seriously doing a head comparison would be what I would want to see.

He is a magazine editor, I would think he'd have other automotive interests than just the Buick board (unfortunately, that's probably the truth for most mag editors). However, I'm just taking a guess. I really have no clue if magazine editors have to wrench and write all day and night. :Do No:

I've gotta admit though, I was pretty blown away when I saw this post. Not everyday that you have a major magazine editor ask for your opinion at a place where you hang out... that is, of course, if it really is him.

    71GS455 Best Package Wins!

    Glen,

I'm normally pretty skeptical on things like this, maybe that's a result of all of the fantastic emails we all get that I automatically check through snopes, but I do think this may actually be the real thing. Along with that, I "grew up" on usenet newsgroups and saw many a troll looking to amuse himself with the reactions of the "regulars" when he could. One of the reasons I think it is really the CC Editor is, as of last night, he hadn't been online since his second post.

Had this been someone screwing around to see us all get riled up at a little national attention, the perpetrator would have been monitoring more often to see how nuts we would actually get. And don't kid yourself, we can REALLY get nuts if the issue is right!

I think more importantly than just the proposition of a CC article, is all of the different replies as to what those of us in the Buick camp are thinking about these days. This thread has allowed us to speak our wishes about street motors, street/strip motors, along with alternative fuels and the like. I think those vendors that cater to us should be taking a look through this thread and taking the requests to heart. Everyone knows that we would love a new block (or two), but how many realize that we also want to drive these cars and be environmentally "friendly" at the same time!?

So hopefully Douglas is truly reading and hopefully the other vendors are too.

i would love to see a buick skylark sleeper no gs hood, just hubcaps and a mean 455 4 speed bench seat car

    How about a sleeper Electra?

btw, (and off topic) anybody else remember an old magazine article about "free horsepower" where they took an early 70's Caddy and started removing weight? They used wrenches as far as they could, then broke out a chop saw. Ended up with a rolling chassis / driveline that did the 1/4 in some pretty insane times...

Its too bad there isn't more of those Bulldog blocks floating around. Surely it'll pop up in the new stuff section of the mag. I'd just like to see one of those built up in CarCraft. Then stick it in a nice 225.

I would like to see the price difference in trying to bolt on one of those prochargers to a standard block compared to pulling a good running motor for pistons alum heads cam. I would think most guys have a decent running block already instead of pulling the block for all of these mods and spending that much money on heads. If they could get "Procharger" kit from the company with hardware to bolt it too a big block or small bolt that would make the small block guys happy too. This wolud be a true bolt on project with "BIG" power potential without pulling the motor and spendind money on heads and everything else. Then go for heads shootout because everyone is on the edge of there seat waiting for that FACTS about heads. The E-85 is very cool as well but It's not available to me in Canada yet. I would like to see if they could use the corn oil in a blower motor?? My 2 cents

I am the most newb of cars. I'd like to see the 455 be a somewhat attainable build. Something like leave as many internals as you can alone. Maybe how to get a 73 motor to have good compression and a decent motor and not the smogged up engine it is.

But PLEASE don't spout the commonly misquoted notion that the Stage1 has over 400 horsepower! Dennis Manner (designer of the 455 and the Stage racing equipment) did the dyno tests and the 1970 455 Stage1 maxed out at 376HP - with all accessories and belts and with exhaust manifolds.

Oh, and just for giggles, put your 455 into a 4500 pound Riviera and show the other side what torque can do.

    ratio's w/ stock CC heads.
    Timing comparos....Total timing & what makes best power..30, 32, 34 deg?

    Ignition...Hei vs. points vs. MSD

Intake comparo...Performer vs. SP1 vs B4B vs. Offy?

CARBURETOR COMPARO!!!...Q-jet vs Street Avenger vs. Double pumper vs
    Demon?

Answers: We do not have the original car, intake or exhaust manifolds because the engine came from a wrecking yard. We only have room for two stories about the 455 so we'll need to test as many parts as possible in one story then upgrade from there. The E85 story is already on the way with a less-valuable engine (SBC) in case it explodes.
The plan: Since we cant strap a grenade to the dyno, we will need to at least rebuild the stock short block then back cut the valves and clean up the stock heads for a baseline with an Edelbrock dual-plane manifold and long-tube headers. For a cam, how about the basic Stage I grind for the 360-370 and 500 lb-ft power combo. Then we can swap on the E-heads, Bulldogs, and T/A heads back to back because they all have 68 cc chambers with single and dual plane intakes. We can then upgrade the cam to either the largest cam that the best heads can utilize with as-delivered springs or change the springs and use a huge grind. That is three heads, two intakes, two cams on a "stock" short block. Should give you guys enough info to make good buying decisions.
Stage two we can get into pistons and strokers if you are interested. Comments?

That sounds great! I wouldn't bother with the stock cam. I'd use a TA212 instead. It's a really small cam that people with nearly stock engines often use as an upgrade. Either that, or look at the straightline 226-238 cam (contact Jim Burek at PAE enterprises for the info). Then, bolt the heads on with the small cam and dual plane. Finally, use the single plane intake, big cam, and let it fly.

    Douglas-

thanks for posting. I still have one of my all time favorite CC's, which was part of the Americruise editions, that covered the travels of a white '70 GSX

The '73 engine should actually be fine for your build. The oil passages are enlarged from the '70 to '72 models. Just make sure you "misplace" all the emissions junk, and be sure you use the right head gaskets- the '73 and up blocks are "double scallop" units compared to the earlier 'single scallop' units. If you look at the block on the deck between the # 3 and 5 cylinders, you should see two bumps or scallops. earlier blocks don't have this, and gasket selection should be done with care to ensure you ise the right one.
