i had a stock 73 buick 455 out of a centurion in my chevelle for a few months and it had 120is compression in all cyls except for 1 it was like 80 or 90 and the carb didnt work right and i had 2.56 peg leg with 275/60/15s and it would throw chunks of rubber when i would punch if from a stop. my left tire now looks like a slick cause it was too fun... maybe you need to adjust your secondaries or something. im thinking your secondaries are opening but its not getting any more fuel..

My '73 literally dies off the line. I'm pretty sure it's a blown accelerator pump. I will say though that when it was running the acceleration was pretty good for a car so big. I would imagine that with the extra weight these cars have in the back it's more of a hook and go than a sit and spin kind of car. Remember that a tire spinning is a car that's losing. Take advantage and leave people at the starting line.

Sorry, Devon, I didn't mean to sound like I was pounding you. I come across that way sometimes.

Back on topic, bigblockboat, does the car take off reasonably well at part throttle, off the line? Does it nosedive if you punch it at speed? Pump the throttle with the engine off, looking in the primaries. Did you get a nice squirt? If so, poke your secondary air valves and see if they tip in too easy. There is a spring to hold them shut, and it could be weak or out of adjustment. There's a little allen-head screw under the secondary air valve shaft. Loosen it and turn the screw on the side of the carb to tighten it up, if it's too loose. You can find the spec somewhere on line. Bigger cars need it set tighter so the secondaries don't come in too early and give a bog. Take a look. Just a thought.

Good grief Steve, no need to apologize. I do far, far worse than that, and get chastised all the time.

Diagnosis via text is tough enough.
