You might want to try tuning your 4 barrel. I have an Edelbrock 600 on a stock '65 300 Skylark and it never feels like too much carb at all. It's about the size that came on the car, I have the original Carter AFB in a box. While the Edelbrock AFB style might not be the greatest carb in the world, it starts right up and never feels like too much carb. I say work with what you have.

    Marvin,

I concur with the above post. The four barrel should be fine, assuming it's tuned correctly. If it's beyond repair, then a new replacement would be about $250 with electric choke.

Note that the carbs on eBay are for the '64 model and require engine coolant to the choke heater, whereas your '65 model has a stove heater to the carb from the right manifold. You'll need a two barrel manifold. Not worth much, but hard to find when you need one... It would be less to replace a 4bbl with a new 4bll by the time you're done.

I think edlebrock even has a 450CFM carb, might be a good option to. If I remember right thats what my buddy had on his modified chrysler slant six, 225 ci. Ran like a champ.

I have a 2bbl intake and carb still on a '65 300 engine I will sell you if you are still looking for one. Even have the smaller air cleaner baseplate to fit it. It ran fine when I took the engine out of the car about 8 years ago. Been in my cilmate controlled garage ever since.
