Carb leaking down over night

I have a 65 gs with the factory 2x4 setup. My problem is that the car is hard to start when cold and also after sitting for several hours. Found out that the primary carb is leaking down when setting. Other then the seat being bad, what other issues could cause the problem. The carb was rebuilt several years ago. The plan is to remove and rebuild the carb when its time to put the car away for the season.

My Q-Jet did that, too. I epoxied the well plugs and the problem went away, sort of. It seems modern gas is engineered for closed fuel systems, and likes to evaporate. Solved it with a "on when cranking only" supplemental (pass thru) electric fuel pump.

Joe, thanks for the reply. I installed an electric pump to help with the problem. Plan on removing the carb later to check for any leak issues.

Which electric fuel pump did you guys use?

I did a search and saw recommendations on some antique auto boards for Airtex E8016s (2.2-4.5 psi) or Airtex E8012s (4-9 psi). Both are solenoid pumps which are free-flowing when not in use. Ideal for momentary use to prime carbs.

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

On our '65 Skylark, if it sets longer than a day, I need to prime it. There is not fuel in the line to the carb, nor is there much of a 'pump shot' when you look down the throat of the carb after it sits. Once started it starts and runs great the rest of the day with no stumble, etc. I choose to dump a couple ounces down the carb rather than cranking it for too long. Carb was rebuilt as well. Looks like it's time again.

I used the E8016s pump, with a toggle switch under the dash. I turn on the pump, give it time to prime the carb, tap the gas to set the choke and the car starts on the first or second try. Much better then cranking on the starter, what seemed like forever, to get the car to start.

Thanks Glenn, that'll be in my shopping cart soon!
Did you mount it by the tank or at engine?

Glenn, The Carter AFB carbs can not leak fuel into the intake because of the one piece fuel bowl design. The Q Jet carb was famous for leaking fuel into the manifold because the soft plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowls were prone to leaking. Epoxy glue was the official fix. Your fuel is evaporating from the bowls when shutting down a hot engine, especially if you are using ethanol gas. We went through this same issue with my wife's '65 Skylark and my dual quad 409 Impala. I put Airtex electric pumps with switches on both cars and use them for boost pumps to fill the carbs. Works great. I also started using non-alcohol fuel in the 09 and the carbs will have enough fuel for a restart without priming for at least 2 weeks. Try to find some straight fuel for your Buick. You will notice a big difference in hot restarts too.

I mounted the pump along the frame rail, about under the seat. That cut down the amount of wiring i had to do. Wired into the fuse block. Need to make a change and add a resister to the wiring.

I think part of the problem has to do with the big air cleaner on a 2x4 motor. A lot of area to hold the heat. Just added the pump last week and still working out the bugs on starting the car. So far it starts a lot better then it did. I found that my car likes Sunoco premium the best.
