Can anybody tell me where the purge hose off of the charcoal cannister gets connected? The assembly manual says air cleaner (not a very descriptive pic), but the Chilton shows a purge nipple on the carb! This is on a '72 GS 350 with the correct Q- Jet, and air cleaner (dual snorkel). ou: The carb has 3 ports on the front (PCV, full vac, & timed vac) and I can't tell where it could go on the air cleaner.
The hose for the charcoal canister gets connected to the carb. I can't get my hood open right now, so I'm going off of my assembly manual and the pic is kinda hard to read, but I'm pretty sure it goes to the port in the center, down low near the intake. It looks to me that there are 4 ports on the front of the carb., not 3. I do have a '71, but I seriously doubt this would have been different on a '72. I know for sure that it doesn't go to the air cleaner. Just curious, but where in your assembly manual did you find this info. Mine (again for a '71) only has a drawing which shows vac. tube routing. It is page 6-7.3, and is titled "Vacuum Tube Routing-Engine- Front 350 4 BBL WITH A/C &/OR H.D. COOLING & ALL 455", and has part # 1235500-1. It is dated 5/26/70, says it is "first used 1971", and is for "series ALL". I'd be curious to know if the '72 manual has the same drawing.
In the '72 manual, sheet 6-5.12 AIR CLEANER COLD AIR INLET (dual snorkel) (sub assembly) & 6-6.8 VACUUM TUBE ROUTING - ENGINE - FRONT 350 4 BBL - "GS" with A/C & or H.D.C. The vacuum ports on this carb (7042244) are as follows: 4 o'clock - timed port 7 o'clock - PCV 10 o' clock - full I do not have the TCS solenoid, and all 3 ports on the TVS are capped off.
The Charcoal canister purge hose gets connected to the big port at the top of the carb. It DOES NOT get full manifold vacuum under any circumstances. Thats why it must be connected ABOVE the throttle plates of the carb. Mark
This is where my charcoal cannister line is routed. The top passenger side port is full manifold vacuum.
smartin, what year carb is that? My original 71 carb had the canister plugged into the top of the carb. my PCV went into the port your showing there. Damn, gotta get another digital camera ou: Mark
Thanks for the help fella's but my carb does'nt have that port on the throttle plate. I don't have a camera, so I'll try to explain a little better: looking at the filter(positions referenced) 4 o'clock is ported vacuum, 7 o'clock is PCV, 10 o'clock is full vacuum, these are the only vacuum ports on the front, there is 1 on the back side for the heater controls, and one on each corner (pass. side) for the vacuum breaks.(dual delayed). I don't know any other way to explain this, and I just can't see any where else for this to be hooked up!
Mine is the same as smartin's, and I do have an original '71 carb. (#7041544) I can see the # on smartin's carb, and it two is a '71. The PVC should go to the port at 7 o'clock. This is exactly the way the '71 ass'y man. shows it. Perhaps there is a difference between the two years after all.:jd: Pat, can you scan the pages from your man. Perhaps we can make some sense of them?
7 o'clock?? Isn't that the PCV port? Looking at the carb from the front of the car..... Pat what is the model number on your carb???
350-4 and 455-4 vacuum plumbing.... 72 will have some different things due to EGR and smog stuff... Does anyone have a 72 manual they can post?
Pat, After further review, I must on eat my original words and say that it probably goes to the air cleaner after all. Since your carb only has 3 ports, I would trust the ass'y man. They were year specific and Chiltons is not. I have found some drawings in my Buick Chassis and Body Illustration Catalog that shows the purge hose going to the bottom side of the air cleaner snorkel on the '73 thru '75 A bodies. Obviously, Buick moved it from the carb. to the air cleaner at some point, and based on what you have found so far, I'd check the bottom of the snorkels for a fitting or hole. BTY, do you have a '72 air cleaner (drivers side snorkel opening should be triangular and smaller than the other).
Adam, thanks for the scan but I have the '71 manual. I'm thinking there is a difference between the two years now.:beer
I think I found it! I found a illustration of a '73 dual snorkel air cleaner that shows an elbow connector attaching to the bottom side middle of the air cleaner. It attaches with a clip similar to the one on the side of the air cleaner. Anyway, I looked up the part in the Parts Catalog, and sure enough, it lists it for all 72-74. Part number 6487360, connector, evap. emission control hose to air cleaner. Hope this makes sense:Comp:
Thanks Adam, Darren, & Mark. I beleive this thing gets hooked to the air cleaner, but I must be missing that elbow attachment. Yes, it is a '72 dual snorkel air cleaner, & the Q-Jet # is 7042244. I'm going to have to get someone at work to scan the pages from my manual, so I'll try to post them sometime this week. Thanks again for all your help!
Cannister tube connects to the snorkel with a plastic elbow connector. That is the way it was for my 72 Skylark 350-2
