I want to replace the carpet in my car that the mice used as a urinal for twenty years. Any advice on where to get a repro? I know a lot of people sell them, but are some better/more correct than others? Thanks!
Ken,ACC(Auto Custom Carpets) makes the carpeting that many vendors sell.I've got one in my car and it fit pretty well.
Ken ACC sell it cut for a 4 speed . I just compard it with our original and it is right on. Get the black 80/20 loop --$!75 molded. You need to carefully reuse your old thick jute by removing it with a wide putty knife.I comes with thin jute on the back which you can leave.
Ken, I always bought automatic carpets for Buick 4-speeds. The 68-72 buick hump is so small that the automatic carpets fit fine. If you buy a 4-speed carpet that is molded for a chevelle it will fit like a bag. Duane
Jim, They are probably selling the automatic carpets for both auto and 4-speeds, which is fine. Just want everyone to make sure they order Buick carpet sets and not ones for a Chevelle. Sometimes people do that to "save" money, and in this instance it won't work. Duane
Thanks Guys! ACC it is. I'll make sure I'm getting a correct fitting carpet from them before ordering. :TU:
You trace your own hole on the 4 speed carpet which as I undestand it is different than the auto cut. At least that was my impression. At least they show two different numbers. The carpet looks just like the original. Duane I am putting in new, original style sound deadners (asphalt/paper type) just in case you and Brad peek under the carpets.
Yeah Jim, but what about the vapor barriers behind the doors? They better not catch you with any duct taped on Hefty bags!
Ken, What's wrong with Hefty bags? I think they were original on X-Camino's, plus you can use the left over ones for clean-up. You guys crack me up. Duane
Original on the X-Camino, eh? Now come on, Duane, Carl is searching the earth for original exhaust bolts so he'll have the right head look on a bolt you can barely see and you're gonna let hefty bags slide?!? o No: You're slippin', man, you're slippin'!
Guys, I have a new saying now. "RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG!" But honestly, I try to help people save money on their restorations. Yes, if you are building a "concours" correct show car, you need to make sure the "visible" things are correct, but even then there is no need to spend bukoo money on things that are hidden. The day I start looking for the correct carpet underlayment, door panel vapor barriers, or the correct early vs late 70 door lock and window linkage is the day I retire. I have enough to check. Duane Now if you guys want me to get really nasty, I can start the concours judging by looking at the car keys. If they aren't the correct letter codes for that year, or it is a "3" key car, then I can deduct points. Or maybe I can check the DOT codes on the tires, and deduct points for repro or incorrect originals. But this type of judging would be on "Platinum" class cars. Even then I would not look at the carpet underlayment or door panel vapor barriers.
Now you're talking, Duane! Let's pretend we're as freakish as those Vette guys! Pssst.... Anyone know how to restamp keys? p
You may laugh, but I do have the original air in the tires of one of my GN's...along with the washer fluid! Also, saved the original oil filter...it's black with silver lettering, BTW. Have the original battery (long since dead), too! And to think some people think I'm anal...
