Good morning, I was cleaning up newly acquired stage 1 heads and noticed a blob of JB weld on freeze plug edge. I chipped away a portion of paint, JB weld and this is what I found. It looks like a chip at hole perimeter. Can this be repaired? Is it ok to replace plug and cover chip with JB weld. I'm not sure if this leaked as I did not see these heads in use. Opinions please. Thanks, Robert
Indy Cylinder Head had fixed way worst very rare cast iron stuff. But like Brian said, it can be repaired. Something like that I would just have it repaired locally. They should use the Nickel welding process or better yet the newish 77 non cracking cast iron welding rod.
First yank that plug out to get a look at how much outside wall meat is left. If this is the rear side of that head and there’s enough meat left then a good and solid repair would be to simply drill and tap it out for a Allen head pipe plug. actually depending on the size you may be able to just tap it for pipe.
Thanks to all for responding to my post. Today I dropped off heads at my machine shop. He's going to disassemble and change springs anyway, plug will be removed and damage will be evaluated for repair. I will update with photos. It may take a while, shop is very busy. Robert
That repair can be done by the some of the less-experienced,due to where it is and lack of severity. For the serious repairs,I send them to Midwest Cylinder Head,in Idaho. They have repaired blocks, heads, etc, that most others would not even touch.
It's good that the springs will get changed out also because when they get pitted from rust like you have on them they can just up and snap on you.
