Change from Lectric Limited to Pertronix conversion?

    The Pertronix has its place. It does work and can be very reliable and everything will seem fine when driving down the road. However,that were it about stops. I have seen countless issues with those during dyno pulls,where you can actually monitor that. If you are scratching for HP,they don’t cut it.

    Yes, I’ve read some of those issues as well. Guess I got lulled to sleep when my motor Dyno’d at 502 hp with the LL single wire and Jim ran it all the way to 6000. Figured the Pertronix had to be at least that good and added a rev limiter.

    You might do all of that and end up back where you started.

    Some cars had a solenoid that would bump up the idle when the AC was on or to prevent run-on. It mounts where it can hit the throttle stop. Might be a solution to the stall issue and allow you to run a lower idle.

    I have heard of countless issues in the performance parts industry of trouble in one form or another. It all comes back to made in CHINA!

    ...and the Communist Collaborators in this country who fail to do proper QA.

    There were crappy auto parts--and everything else--before our politicians let Communist China in the door. But they weren't as common, and in most cases they weren't as bad. It has always been possible to do things more cheaply if quality can be sacrificed without folks noticing (right away.)

    In 1972, Buick used an idle control solenoid. It bolted to the 1972 intake with 2 bolts. It's purpose was to close the throttle upon shut down to avoid run on because of the leaner mixtures and higher idle speeds. It was energized anytime the ignition was on and had nothing to do with the A/C. In later years, it might have been used to increase the idle speed when the A/C was on. To use one for that purpose on a 1970 engine, you would have to fabricate a way to attach the solenoid.

    I know some boat engines used cutout ignition when it was shifted in and out of gear. Basically it would shut the ignition off when going into gear to soften the hit. It is a split-second action but it works.

    Mallory ignition module used to be a good unit but it has been over twenty years since I used one.

    I still use the mallory unilite conversion modules in my buicks.

    Ray,

    I would say at this point the simplest thing to do is to is to just replace the LL module. This very well may be a characteristic of just this particular module, not representative of "how they work".. I have installed lots of these over the years, never had a customer come back and have any issues with one.

    Let me know if your interested in trying that, I can have them drop ship you a new unit.. I will take care of the warrantee with them, if it comes to that. Alternatively, you can just send the whole distributor back to me, and I will replace the module, and test it on an engine here.

    Pertronix 1 and 2 had issues.
    Do you think pertronix 3 loses HP too?

    The Pertronix I and II werent great units, the relied on a magnetic reluctor ring which was fixed beneth the rotor, and the magnets would fall out as the unit aged. The III is a totally different design, and IMO much better unit.

    III requires an aftermarket tachometer or their "filter"

    I have one in a 69 Chevelle with a factory tach and don't think I have a filter?

    My car had a III in it when I got it. The Sun tach worked just fine with it. Everything else about the III was problematic though...
