hey guys, so far on my car ive had carb, and ignition problems, i guess the time has come for the charging/starting system to start acting up :af: . in the morning, the car will crank and start up normally, but after i run it for a while, if i try to start it, it turns like the battery is dead. the damn thing just turns barely enough to get it started, then ill turn it right back off, try again, and it will start with not even a slight hesitation? :Do No: when i got to work i hooked the battery tester to it, and it said my battery was real low on the CCAs, but about 1 1/2 to 2 hours later i tested it again and it said the battery was ok :puzzled: . by the time i got off work, it started fine, drove her home, and then when i tried to start it again, it did it again, cranked slow, started, then when tried again, no problem. what could it be? im preety much illiterate when it comes to electric crap. :Do No:

ps. alt is about 6 mo old, terminals are clean, and i recently did some work on my HEI about 2 weeks ago thanks! :TU:

I would first check if your timing is set too high, but most likely your starter motor need an overhaul.

If you have a voltmeter, check the battery voltage before starting, and than when the engine is running. The voltage should increase to around 13.7 Volt.

The starter is probably on it's last days, drawing too much ampere. The situation just get worse as the starter heat up, due to it's location close to the exhaust manifold.
A good clean up & a set of new brushes normally fix the problem.

    Bingo.

I concur it's a starter problem. Lifetime warranty starters are cheap and plentiful at your corner parts store, and a snap to change.

I strongly suggest checking the connections to the starter before investing in the starter. If the battery is checking flakily, as posted, I suggect checking the battery carefully. Be sure that the battery is fully charged, then test. It is very likely that the battery is defective internally if the testing is not consistent, but the procedure is. You are onto something with the battery. Ray
