Checking VIN without going to the DMV?

I have some car bodies I bought over 15 years ago as just stripped shells. I would like to run the VINs without going to the DMV. They are 1965 and 1967 shells so they have the old shorter VIN and that may be an issue when doing the research. Any idea how to run the VINs other than going to the California DMV? If any of them are stolen I would report them, but I would like to know that before they inform me in the office.

I had this site bookmarked, it checks for salvage and stolen histories.

It's not 100% all-encompassing. This is from the site:
    >>>VINCheck cross-references the VIN entered against participating insurer’s theft and salvage records. Accordingly, only insurance records appear in response to a VINCheck query and only those records of participating insurers. VINCheck does not query law enforcement records or records of insurance companies that elect not to participate in VINCheck. While VINCheck is a useful free tool, it is not a comprehensive vehicle history report and should not be relied upon when purchasing a vehicle. It is possible that a vehicle could be stolen, seriously damaged, or otherwise have encumbered title and those records related to those incidents may not appear on a VINCheck report. It is also possible that records retrieved by a VINCheck could contain errors. NICB strongly encourages the public to engage in additional due diligence prior to purchasing a vehicle.

I ran one of the VINs on that site but when I went to the site they list it would not take my older short VINs. My other thought is the vehicles would have been so old they would not have had full coverage insurance so I doubt that insurance companies would have been notified. I'll try my other two VINs on VINCheck and see if they come up in their database. Thanks for the quick response.

Thanks Walt. My VIN came back negative. I'll check with the DMV soon.
