Choke Coil for '71 350

    Looking for one of the divorced thermostatic choke coils and its cover for my '71 LeSabre Quadrajet on a 350, automatic trans if it matters.

    Went to a manual choke years ago, now I can't remember why, and I'm tired of messing with it and want my automatic choke back.

    James,

    2bbl and 4 bbl chokes are different.

    2bbl coil 7041194
    4bbl coil 7041192

    Sorry, I don't have either.

    You beat me to it Adam. As I started reading this thread, I was already thinking of how to search for my old thread... now I don't have to. :laugh:

    As my thread says... I used a 455 choke cup and it worked great.
    Still works great too.

    Of course, I pitched the coil years ago, when I first swapped to a 4-bbl manifold, and put a Holley mech. choke on it.
    stupid :spank: stupid:spank: stupid...

    And to make it even better, for years I had the bathtub piece on the manifold to plug the hole, but about once a year it'd start leaking, so last year I tossed it and put a piece of steel plate over the hole.

    Maybe I could get me a choke coil like you have Adam, and mount it on the plate...hmm...

    YES!!! You can do that very simply.

    Call TA and get one. But you have to make the linkage from a piece of metal liek a thick coat hanger.

    3 bolt is a 72 part....won't work on a 71:(

    James,

    Have you considered a manual, cable operated choke? I put one on a '70 350 years ago and it worked well. It took some getting used to, but, once I got the hang of it ... it worked great. I had to fabricate a bracket and I mounted it where the coil would have been. I don't remember the particulars, but, I liked being able to control the choke. Then again, if you can find the right one - automatic is always nice for a driver.

    Adam - Now that I think about it, I guess my manifold came from a '72 donor car, way back when in the 80's, 'cause it takes the three-bolt thermostat.

    Steve, you still got that one, and also the "bathtub" it sits in?

    Matt, I've got a manual choke, had it since I stupidly put a Holley on, also back in the 80's before I grew up. It works well, and IS handy for bumping up the idle speed from inside the car, but I'm just tired of messing with it, and want to go back to the LazyMan method of starting.

    I changed my 70 (looks like the ones in the link) to an electric choke. though the part is kinda pricey. really easy to adjust though. has worked really well.

    I first tried to go to an electric choke on my Q-jet, but ran into some problems. :mad:

    Got an electric choke off a chebby Suburban q-jet, and I swear that's all it had on it, just the electric choke in the housing, with a fast idle cam.

    My older Q-jet has the dual choke breaks, the two vacuum diaphragms, one cracks the choke open a tiny bit while the engine is starting, and the other pulls it open against the thermostat coil once the engine is running. Apparently, then the tension between the springs in the second vacuum diaphragm and the choke thermostat adjusts the choke until the engine is warmed up.

    Anyway, the two systems can't be merged together, and believe me, I sat on the garage floor surrounded by choke parts and tried for an hour the other night. :rant:

    What I don't figure is how the later Sururban choke operated without any apparent pull-offs....:Do No:

    So I guess my choices are: 1. Get an original Buick choke thermostat, 2. Adapt a choke like Adam's to the plate existing on my engine, or 3. Go back to the yard and keep searching for q-jet electric choke parts until I find one that will work.

    So - Anybody got a Buick thermostat and bathtub for a '72 350 manifold? Steve?....Steeevvve?..........steve? :bglasses:

    Also - Are the choke thermostats the same for 350 and 455 4-bbls? That would wider the search possibilities at the local yard...

    The t-stats are the same, but the linkage rod is bent differently. You may be able to bent it to make it work.

    James i know there are 2 vacuum pull offs.

    James tryed to post you my housing off a 455 with 3 bolt flange if you think it will work i'll sell for 15.00 give me a post if interested

    Thanks, but I found one at the local yard this afternoon. Only $5, and a double-handful of little goodies included! Yippee! Only bummer is it'll be the middle of next week until I get back under the hood again, sigh...

    Thanks everybody for all the great info! This board is the best thing since sliced bread! Now I just need to get a stamp on my BPG membership...

    Don;t ya just love those handful of parts you find at that yard?

    I usually manage to pick up a bunch of carb parts such as secondary rods and pulloffs. Lots of random brackets and bolts too!
