Anybody know of any good chrome shops in the central Mass. or New England area? Just started resto on a recently acquired 70 Skylark ragtop and the rear bumper is crap (couple rust holes and flaking chrome). Looking at either getting it restored/rechromed, or replaced with one from The Bumper Boyz in Los Angeles since they seem to be one of the few places to get one. Speaking of them, anybody ever get a bumper from there? Good place or not?

    Info on Bumper Boyz

Check with this guy http://v8buick.com/member.php?u=373 (Van Karos). He may have some bumpers.
You can use the search function at the top of the page to get info on Bumper Boyz. I have seen at least one horror story about them.
I think thePartsPlace.com stocks the bumpers.
If you can find a core for rechrome Desert Dog(use search) will rechrome them for $300.00 shipped to your door.
    Good Luck

I guess I'll have to further investigate Desert Dog and the Parts Place then.

I was told by a guy once that chroming is never good anymore in the US?
That we can't use lead primer anymore so the bumpers will always rust thru the back? I guess u just have to paint the back of the bumper each year? I dunno, but that's what I was told. False?

 I never heard anything like that, I was under the impression that triple plated chrome was copper on top of bare steel, nickel on the copper, and chrome on the nickel. I never heard of lead primer.

Maclellans in Waltham mass show cromed my bumpers, and straightened the rear on out for 350 a piece, and he did an awesome job. He also chromed a few odds and ends on the car, nose piece, air cleaner, etc.

The back is not chromed. Only the outside.

You can paint, or what my friend does is undercoat the back of his bumpers that have been rechromed. Nobody looks at them anyway, and undercoating protects them better than paint.

Can Castle or Maclellans fix the rust holes or do they just do rechroming?

Check out the duct tape special over the holes on this bad boy :puzzled: :

I don't think castle does welding rot.
Why not try BUMPER BOYZ i think they have bumpers for about $375 without a core. Your rotted bumper would not be considered a good core. These guys i see travel around New England to the local shows. A few in Mass and in NH.

    Good Luck

I mentioned them in the beginning of this thread but somebody said it was a bad idea to go with them and that there are horror stories elsewhere on this site; I did a search for them on here and didn't see too many good things. I called them awhile ago, I think they quoted me $390 with an exchange, $510 without, and that doesn't include shipping.

I have physically seen BUMPER BOYZ bumpers at the swap meets and they did not seem bad. However i have not bought one as i haven't had the need as of late. Being they do frequent the local swap meets you could actully see the product before buying them and save on shipping. As far as price i am going on memory of their flyer. And at the time i was looking at chevelle bumpers which may have an impact on cost.

Bumper Boyz bumpers always look ok new. The feedback I've gotten on them is that the chrome does not last. It peels. It's a huge production line and possibly the care which is taken per bumper at smaller places is not taken there.

I've seen their chrome at Englishtown events as well. I wasn't all that impressed, but it was decent looking. All chrome shops are sort of close quality wise. I can find something wrong with just about any bumper from any chrome shop. How long they hold up is the important thing.
