Usually it is stainless trim. There is a special too sold to remove it from the clips. Check www.yearone.com www.opgi.com
It looks like a little claw... I didn't have one when I took the stainless off my windshield, so I used a small sears screwdriver. I'll never do THAT again...what a pain.
