I didn't ask as I was more concerned with the overall condition of the car and body. I'll go see it in the next few days once I find the time it will take to cross the border!

I e-mailed the seller and asked for detailed photos of the car, but I hope you can also post a few of your photos after you looked at that wagon [IMG]

Good luck, and if you don't want to buy the car for some reason, inform me about the general condition and things you came across :TU:!

    Hi Doug,

Oh my! I can only imagine the fuel mileage this wagon achieves. Looks interesting. If you get the wagon, I promise to bring my 1989 Electra Estate Wagon to a few shows. Better yet, I'll race ya, since I wanted to transplant an intercooled Turbo V-6 into the Electra. Don't laugh! Buick engineers already did this in 1988, with a GNX powerplant, and brought the car out to the GSCA Nationals.

    Nando.

The guy did a recent trip to eastern washington where he averaged 11 mpg :Dou: Likely 8 mpg in the City. Good thing I'm not to interested in the mileage. It's not perfect and there are some issue with the paint apparently, but if it's all there and solid, I'll be bringing it home. And if not, I'll be sending lots of pics to Erik.

I cant begin to say how many of those we have ran demo derbys. :Dou: But always saved the BBB's :Brow: Derby demand has sent price's out of site on most of those clamshell gm wagons...& They rare to see today!

Over the years (71-76) GM made over 1 million (1,141,472) of those full-size wagons. Prices for those clamshells have increased the last couple of years. Especially the 3 seats w/woodgrain and powered tail gate.

Saw the car today. A little dissappointing. Car does not look like only 61K miles. No third seat, tan vinyl interior. Front seat is a little beat up with a number of tears/split seams. Someone had given the car a cheap clearcoat in the past and it is peeling off. Body is in decent shape otherwise, but rust starting in the usual places and heavy surface rust in the undercarriage. Bumpers are good, but rear will need rechrome as its starting to rust through. The car looks like it's been sitting outside a good part of it's life.

No major cancer, engine runs well nice and smooth but engine bay is really dirty. Some minor dents and scratches here and there. Power locks, windows, and 6-way drivers seat, all working. Speed alert, am/fm stereo, a/c all working. Clamshell works but with a loud clunk as it gets to the top. Window works but is slow.

Owner is a very nice guy and very honest about his description. Was his grandmothers car and wants it to go to someone who will look after it... and he's thankfully turned away guys wanting to derby it. Pretty solid if someone wants to take on the work.

I'm passing on it, but here are some more pics if anybody else is interested.

    Thanks Doug :TU:

I don't really care about the two seats because a third seat has to go anyway to store the LPG tank.

But I don't like the tan interior:
If the car really has to be red, I want an all red interior as well.

I don't think that those derby guys were willing to pay the US$ 2700 asking price for the car, so what do you think his lowest price will be ?
I never got a reply to my e-mails, for some reason that's the way it is with Graigslist ads.......

    Hi Doug,

Too bad the wagon hadn't been in better condition. I like the contour of the rear 1/4 panel glass wrapping into the tailgate. Production-wise, the 2-seaters were rarer, as 75Riv has detailed, but the 3rd seat is a desirable option.

When you pay US$ 8.06 for 1 US gallon of petrol, that third seat option isn't that desirable anymore....
I rather use that third seat space to store my LPG tank and pay only US$ 2.39 for 1 US gallon of LPG :TU:

He apparently had a derby guy offer him $3,500 for the car. I get the impression it's been for sale for awhile and he's been dropping the price accordingly, so the derby offer may have been when the price was higher.

As far as price goes, in good condition, I'm going to guess that might be a $6,000 car, but it's going to need paint and some body work, some interior work and a lot of cleaning and detailing under the hood and chassis to get it there. Based on the cost of a paint job and interior work alone, and assuming the clean up and detailing was done on your back in the garage, you might have $1,000 or so to pay for the car.

They are pretty rare though now, so the right buyer may pay up to $2,000 for it... hard to tell.

There is a "trunk" under the floor in the back instead of a third seat... the three panels just lift up to reveal it, probably not deep enough for an LPG tank, but there.

Edit **Nada Price guides shows low retail as $3990, average $7530 & high $12,900 for this wagon. I think these numbers are on the high side of Reality**

compared to the one I looked at, that one looks like a brand new car!! Factor in the shipping to get it there, that seems like a good deal.

In the photo the car has a Dutch plate saying 59-YB-97:

But according to the RDW (Dutch DMV) website, that plate belongs to a 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo:

The Wagon isn't registered yet, so probably seller used the plates of his other car to make some photos on public roads (dont ask me how I know :pp )

Shipping to Europe cost about $2.500 that includes transport, insurance, import taxes (which may vary to what the seller stated as buying price on the Bill of Sale  )

Add another $350 for DMV-inspection, registering and license plates

(went through this the last couple of weeks with the Electra)
