Hello all! I am needing some instruction on how to clean my lifters. I recently rebuilt my engine and it had no ticking or tapping until the 500 mile break in. I broke cam in for 20-25 mintues and changed oiled. I drove engine 250 miles changed oil. the lifters on one side started tapping right a 500 miles. I want to take them about to see if any trash or debre is in them. Also what do I need to look for to tell if a lifter is bleeding down correctly when I got the intake off and turn the engine?

    Thanks Julian

You can disassemble the liters to clean 'em but it usually isnt worth it, just put a new set in. Figure out why they started ticking in the first place, IF in fact it is the lifters, it may be something as simple as an exhaust manifold leak, a very small leak sounds exactly like a lifter ticking. Check the simple stuff first, also what side does it sound like its coming from, use some logic, and do a process of elimination:) Mark

Retorque your exhaust manifold bolts. They can come loose after some drive time. You'll end up with ticking noises due to leaks in the gaskets.

I can attest to this. I thought my valves were going, opened my hood with the engine running and saw some exhaust coming out of the back of the passenger side exhaust manifold... cracked gasket I assume.
