    Hey guys and gals,
While the head is off my new '53, what's the best way to clean the lifters? They didn't make much noise with the motor running, but are a little sludgy. I don't really want to disassemble them either. Any solvents? Thanks!

I will use gas or gasohol (the alcohol makes it a better solvent!) outdoors only-or mineral spirits-especially for indoor winter projects. I might clean the lifters one at a time to help track and get them on the same lobe. A little oil, too-good luck

That's what I was thinking...Definitely one at a time...I almost had a little scare when the pushrods pulled a few lifters out of their bores when I pulled them out. Luckily they seemed to land next to their bores (I hope!). Thanks for the help...when I reoil them, is there a good spot to do it? Into the top or into the oiling hole on the side?

A buddy used turpentine in his 350 chebby motor. He let it idle for 2 minutes. He got out alot of sludge in the engine. I know it must be old school but I seen the sludge so I know it works.

At autozone or any local automotive store you can get special solevents or recommended cleaning solutions for lifters. In auto consumer at school, we used a normal solovent for cleaning "sludged-up" parts.
