Clear Or Not Clear Coat Gsx Stripes

    My 72 Gsx Clone Is Ready For The Stratomist Blue Paint This Week & My Painter Wants To Know If I Want The Gsx Striping Done In The Correct Factory Black With "no" Clear Coat Or Do I Want Them Clear Coated?? Need To Know What Is Best As It Will Be A Show Quality "clone" 72 Gsx (350) . Have To Take Into Consideration -- Maintenance Care Of Finish, Appearance, Buick Owners Opinions At Shows !!

    I cleared over my side stripes and used semi flat black on the hood. Based on the research I did, I think I got it pretty close. I guess the side stripes are supposed to be semi flat, but all the real cars I looked at must have been painted at some point and the stripes were glossy..

    The hood definitely should be semi flat though. The clear really makes it easy to take care of.

    You can still have the stripes cleared and be satin or semi-gloss.
    Most paint manufacturers sell a matte or satin clear, which can be cocktailed with a full gloss clear to end up with the desired gloss.
    We use R-M, and rather than have a special clear, there are formulas to make the desired gloss using a flattener.
    It's much easier for the painter if they can apply the main basecoat color, lay out and spray the stripes, then clear the whole thing.
