There were actually 2 different syles of the small clutch and brake pedals used on 70-71 manual trans cars. Not sure if other years are the same as I have no reference for other years. The two part numbers used were 1363611 which I believe was more common and is the one pictured in the assembly manual. It has all horizontal lines with a fatter gap in the middle. The second type is #3858198 and has thinner horizontal lines also with a fatter gap in the middle but with two thin vertical lines as well. The corners are also pointier. My 70 GSX came with the less common type on it and I have had discussions with several people on if it is correct. The interesting thing is the orignal 3858198 has the part number(actually has 3988198) clearly molded into the back and the more common 1363611 has no part number at least on the extra clutch pedals I have.. I was lucky enough to find two NOS 3858198 from a Chevy vendor at Carlisle so that is what went on my car. They are eact to the originals that came on my GSX. Below is a pciture of the two types a manual could have.

Notice the part number is not exactly the same as listed but interesting that the last 3 digits are the same as the assembly manual. This pedal could have covered multipe applications

Actually the last 4 digits of the part numbers are the same as assembly manual. I took this off my unrestored GSX and because of the wear on it I have no doubt it was original.

All this may show is in typical GM fashion that the part number does not always match the cast/molded part number or maybe I have it all wrong. Anyone else with this pedal?

The last NOS pedal pads I bought look like the one on the left in your picture.

What I have found is that GM changed the pedal pad designs on clutch pads and parking brake pads for the replacement parts.

I've always thought that the pedal pad style on the R in your pic was what was available via GM as a replacement. Last time I ordered a box of these pads from GM I got the style on the R.

Interesting that they may still be available. At least tow types were orignal installed. I have both types on old pedals.

It was MANY years ago when I bought them from a local GM dealer...at least 10, if not 15 years ago. Run the PN on gmpartsdirect.com and that'll give you some idea of availability. If shows to be not available that still doesn't mean there aren't some sitting on other dealer's shelves.

When I bought my 70, it had the pedal pad on the right. I found that dorman made an exact replacement. I have those on the car. Even my e brake pad matches

I thought the left was OE and right was later replacement/ nos

I had the same expereience as Paul. If you will notice the generally accepted pattern for the original emergncy brake pedal pads, it was horizontal grooves only that match the clutch pedal on the left above. The repros for those are also different. This indicates the pad on the left was original.

Again guys look at the assembly manaual diagram. There were TWO DIFFERENT pads available for the clutch/brake pedals. Looks like Jason's car backs mine up.

My research shows that 3958198 (with vertical lines) was a replacement for 3858198 ( only horizontal lines) that started in May of 1972.

I think the 3858198 with vertical lines would be the one that came with the car from the factory in 70-71 on Bucks as well as other gm models. Except the replacements don't have the correct number of vertical lines.

There are two optional types in 70-71. They look completely different. The ones Jason shows from Dorman looks exact.

That's OE. That goofy one with sharp edges is Pont or something.

You can buy either type new. Check out the fusick 442 catalog page 87. They show both side by side. They list them for different years but do not say which is which (Buick used both styles for the same year.). They are CB64 and CB73. They appear to look correct. My GSX came with the style with the vertical cross lines and not the one with all parallel lines..
