How hard is it to convert a non-posi 10 bolt to a posi??? Anyone have step by step instructions on how to do it?? Pics ???\ Thanks J
All you need is a posi carrier.......what year is your car? You need some special tools in order to install the carrier and set the proper gear mesh pattern.
Its a 71 Skylark. Has a 2:73 limper in it. Plan on going to 3:42, 3:64 and converting it to a posi. Any and all helpful infromation apprecaited. Thanks for the response, J
I hope this helps. http://www.corvette-restoration.com/resources/technical_papers/Differential_Rebuild_Instructions.pdf
We always give help on diffs and can guide anyone on an installation. You just need the time and the willingness to take direction. PLUS PLENTY OF PATIENCE. right here or on the jd web site
Take note of the backlash before you remove the carrier.... Setting up a set of gears that have many miles are not easy to read.. Since you are only changing the carrier you really need to put it back with the exact backlash it has now... When i go thru gears for track use i always categorize them how they were as for depth and backlash so when there used again there is no issues
I just had it done. I went with 3.42s and a rebuilt 8.5 carrier. HUGE improvement over the 3.08 / open rear. I'm running 26" tires; probably going to switch to 28" tires. I didn't mess with the swap myself; sometime it pays just to pay....
If you are simply converting a rear from non-posi to posi, you will not be interrupting or effecting the pinion depth,so you will only need to adjust/shim for the correct backlash. As stated above, take note of what the existing backlash is,& make sure you achieve the same backlash when reinstalling the gear with the new unit.
Looking to do a similar swap in my 71 Skylark with the 3:08 non posi set-up . Did the 3:42 switch make a noticable difference? I have a stock 350 4bbl with headers running into a Magniflow exhaust system and was wondering if the upgrade was worth it? Looking for a little more seat of the pants kick.
Steve, Do you plan on any hwy/interstate driving??? If so, stick with the 3.08, that is the best all around gear set.........3.42 will be burning more gas and you will have minimal difference performance-wise.....we have discussed this many times here.
Thanks for the advice George. Remember seeing a post awhile back which is why I asked. Only want to do things that better the car overall! :beers2:
