dang look at this sweet little car: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2442497052&category=16124 whoever gets it should be happy.
Did all the 1970's have the clear radiator overflow top? It's nice, if you do get it, we'll expect to see it at the track next season! :Brow:
Steve, I believe the clear top was for the early build 70 models. The black top (I think) was a mid year change. Austin, the price is right for that car. I am curious to see how far it goes. I doubt it will go much more. It's pretty rough. Nothing a little work won't fix though!! Are you interested?
Not all '70s have the clear top. It's a mark of an "early" 1970, they also had pointed instrument panel lenses instead of the slightly concave style, and the radiator core support brace was plastic, I'm told. My Skylark Custom is an early '70 and has two of those three things, but I must assume that the rad. brace was broken before I got the car and was replaced. I must mention however that either it was replaced by the dealer, or by an owner who bothered to get the correct sticker for the brace. I also suppose it's possible that mine came with the steel brace from the factory if they ran out of the plastic ones (Time code 10B, built in Flint, if anyone could verify that steel brace theory of mine)
I've never heard of the plastic brace! Anyone have a picture? or proof?:eek2: Also, my buddy has the black top, and his tach is pointed...the other 2 are flat.
adam, id love to buy it, but i have no money. at any rate, i must get my electra looking halfway decent before i go buying anything else. unless its free    anyone know how difficult it is to put exhaust on an electra????
Adam- I'd say your buddy's car had a tach put in it after it was built. I think there's a definite sequence number cut off for 'early' '70 cars, I just can't recall what it is...might be 193000 but don't quote me, that number just pops into my head. I think the chances that two of the three lenses were replaced with late '70 parts and the overflow was replaced too is much less than the chances that it's a regular production sequence car with a replacement tach. Just my opinion, of course, but that makes much more sense to me. I really would like to say 193000 is the cut-off. Then again I have received a number of blunt traumas to my head and that number could be meaningless or it might be part of my high school locker combination Might also be the miles on my car when I bought it, who can tell? My memory's a funny thing, I can recall events from years ago like they just happened but I don't know what I had for breakfast.
I believe all cars built prior to Jan 1 of 1970 had clear tops and pointed lenses. There abouts the newer black tops and flat lenses were used.
This guy has had the car since it was new. He ordered it. I would assume it has to do with maybe a mixing of old and new parts coming in at the factory - maybe a transition period.
Thanks for the comments on my GS Jeff :TU: *********************************** The 'transition of parts' was sometime in December 1969. Here's the ones I know about (Duane can be more specific) Pointed lenses went to flat Clear overflow lids went to black Plastic radiator covers went to metal Woodgrain console shifters went to black plastic Tri-shield interior lenses went 'concentric' *********************************** Adam, I have an 11D car, and here's my radiator cover - BTW - I highly doubt Buick quality control would let different lenses get out on the same car. Possible? Yes. Likely? No.
I didn't think the black shifter handle came out until 71 or 72? Of course, I've been wrong before. Ask my wife! Jeff
Me too, but Marco's isn't for sale! As you can see, I was the high bidder, but the reserve wasn't met. The car is one of the most heavily optioned "non performance" cars I have seen, but I have a few reservations about spending more than I bid. In no particular order: 1) Paint needs some work. Appears to be relatively minor, but haven't had anyone check it out yet. 2) Engine compartment needs a serious detail. 3) Engine is not numbers matching, not sure about tranny, rear end is not. The engine is a couple of months newer than the car. Not sure yet if it is a SF, SR or SS code. 4) Interior was white from the factory, has been entirely replaced with black. Supposedly not dyed, but replaced. What do you guys think it is worth?
I agree. I have a late 70 (April) and woodgrain shifter handle. I don't recall ever seeing a black handle in a 70.
Maybe it was the early '70s cars with the black handle? http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17656
shifter handle/ebay car My '71 came with the woodgrain handle. It's a 12/70 H car. I'm quite sure the black handle was introduced in '72 or later. I bought a '73 console and it came with the black handle. I also bought a black handle from the dealer in about '93 and that was what was supplied as a replacement. The number came up in a numbers change catalog. I still have it in a box. BTW, It looks as if the shifter handle is broken on the car the we stole this thread from. That car needs a mini-resto to warrant 25G. I'd think the air should work, at least. If someone is serious, they should probably pay the bucks and take the time to go have a look at it in person. A non-numbers matching car that needs an interior to have it match the tags is not an investment for profit. If you have the scratch to buy a great looking car to drive...go for it! Matt P.S. - I'm glad this came up on The Bench
