I am looking into a '70 GS 350 with a 3-speed manual tranny. I am wondering what parts I would need and the approximate costs of converting it to a 455 4-speed. Assume that I already have a 455 and that I will be doing the work. I know I'll need a Muncie transmission (M-20, M-21, M-22), different Z-bar, shifter and linkage, motor mount pads (replaced or just re-located?), clutch?, exhaust?, big block fan shroud.

    What else do I need?

How much will it cost? (I'm looking for approximate costs that would include a rebuilt Muncie, and everything else in good used or new condition).

My goal with this thread is to determine if it is more cost-effective to buy a small block, 3-speed manual car and convert it to a big block 4-speed or purchase a car that is already done.

Thanks in advance for your help/opinions.

    Jim is bang on.

Add about another $500-$600 to that for the "Canadian Premium".

Add another $1500 if you plan to go with heavy duty parts. In my opinion, if you are doing the swap, there is no reason you should skip out on a billet flywheel, SFI Bell housing, a good quality clutch that suits your needs (performance or street), and heavy duty driveshaft.

Thanks guys. I assume that some parts could be re-used because the car is a 3 speed manual to begin with. I assume the pedals and bellhousing, ball stud, etc. could be reused? Anything else? I'm guessing that the conversion would be at least a little easier because the hump, pedals, fork, ball stud, etc. are already there. Am I wrong here? Does the drive shaft need to be shortened as well?

I am also considering purchasing the car and just drive it as it is, but a big block stick car is my ultimate goal.

    Thanks again for your input.

All you need is a big block flywheel and clutch assembly for the swap on the tranny. Driveshaft, etc. is all the same. Also need big block frame and motor mounts and exhaust. Not counting the fan shroud, throttle cable bracket, etc. All pedals, linkage, etc are the same as the tranny stays in the same location... You could use the 3 speed stuff d
for now and just change the tranny and shifter when you find one...:3gears:
