Cooper Cobra Tires / No Traction?

    Thanks for reading this far,

My problem is that at any real throttle, 70% or so, under about 40mph, the tires just spin. While it's fun, I would rather be using the power to go forward. My gtech has me running about a 6 sec 0-60, nursing the pedal most of the way. I recently recurved my distributor and put my quadrajet back on. That made thing worse, (or better if I can get more traction).

    I'm running a 455 Buick in a 81 Z28 with a 3.08 posi,1800 stall and t400. I've installed subframe connectors and southside lift bars. Tires are Cooper Cobra 255/60/15s

My question is,.. is it the tires, or should I work on the suspension first. I've had good luck with Coopers in the past, but with alot less power.

Any and all help is appreciated.

    Dennis,

If you're going to any serious drag racing, get race tires.

That being said, my 71 GS455 with 225-70-14 Cooper Cobras went 13.98 with an open 3.08 rear. This was in pretty ideal conditions though.

After going to headers, mandrel exhaust, Performer, Hotchkis lower trailing arms, right side air bag, and 3.42 posi I was able to get a 13.67 out of it. It did have a wheel hop problem at this point. Sticky tires cured that and it went 13.4's for a long time afterwards.

This was with a stock converter too. I had to feather on the launch and try not to leave in the secondaries of the Qjet. Once I got sticky tires that didn't matter of course.

I always loved the way that car transferred weight!

I always had great luck with the Cooper Cobra's if they offered the sizes that I needed for my current car I'd have them now.
I think with your combo your just gonna need a bigger tire, I'm running 275-55's and I have to restrain myself or they're up in smoke.

Thanks for the Info, Will work on tuning the lift bars. Don't know if larger tires will fit under the wheel wells but will look into it. I'll also try and put on some slicks and get a 1/4 time to see how it compares.

    Thanks
