for my 70 GS 455 - Coker tires has put off their redline Radial T/As to next Fall and I'm tired of waiting. DB offers their redline in Cooper Cobra GT (245 - 60 - 15 only) or Firestone Firehawk INDY 500 (235Front/255rear - 60 - 15, no 245 series). Which one is the best all round street tire? Would you go with the same size (245) at each corner or little (235) front and big (255) rear? And I don't have posi (yet!).... - Bill
I can't say anything bad about the Indy 500's I have on my daily driver. Good traction in all weather even snow. Handles great, and so far they have worn like iron with 30,000 miles on them. :TU: If I could, I would buy a set for the Riv to replace the Radial TA's that are on it. With my luck they will probably discontinue them when I can buy them. :ball: Don't know much about Coopers.
I've had the Indy 500's on my Buick since 2004. I researched them then and they had great reviews. Someone asked about them on V8Buick a few months ago and I researched them again and they're still getting great reviews. One guy that drag raced a street Buick said they had better traction than every tire he tried except the MT Drag radial. I like mine a lot but I have nothing to compare them to. Mine are wearing pretty fast but I drive hard. Right now I have 235/60's all around but for my next set I plan to go with 255/60's up front and 275/60's in the rear on 15x8 Buick Rally's. For you, I'd say go with 255's all around if you have good springs up front and don't have the car lowered. I've heard 255's rub on some guys cars and it depends on the ride height.
I've had the Firestone Indy 500 tires on both my 71's and are the best tires I have ever had.I've had bf goodrich t/a's,cooper,and futura on the GS and the Indy tires have given me the best traction of all these.I run 255/60/15's on all 4 and have no issues on rubbing.
I have the 255-60-15's all the way around on my 71, and there's no way they will ever rub. The Firestone's DO NOT come in a 245-60-15, only the 255-60-15, so no more arguments from the 255 naysayer's:Smarty: But, I can tell you that the Firestone 255-60-15 is not as big as a BFG 255-60-15. Maybe those who had, or heard that someone had a rubbing issue with a 255-60-15 BFG Radial TA should give the Firestone's a look when it comes time to buy tires.
Interesting, I called DB to place an order and they made a mistake in their catalog....the 245 size is NOT the Cobra GT but the Turbo-Tech tires by Cooper. :af: Nahhhh - I'll go with the Firestone in the 255 series! - Bill
The 255 60R15 are listed at $198 each at DB. Figure shipping at about $60. Ouch...but they are not getting cheaper! I do not think they ever discount these. - Bill
i went with just the 225-70-15 firestone indy. they fill the wheel cavity fine. i could of gone larger, but these fit fine with 43/4 back space and ride super.
Thanks Bill Sounds like everyone likes firestone better than the T/A'S take some pic's should look nice on your car.
Yes - the redlines...sigh. I've wanted a set for quite awhile and am resigned to paying the going rate. DB is short for Diamond Back. DB and Coker are the only two suppliers of redlines around. One makes the tires from ex-manufactures molds and the other vulcanizes the new sidewall on. Both seem to work and neither is cheap! - Bill
