I bought a 63 Wildcat coupe that supposedly had a 401 in it. After checking the numbers I found it's a JW engine 425 with auto trans. The carb was gone when I bought it. What's the correct carb for this engine? Where would I find the information? Thanks, Mark
The later half of the 63 model year saw the introduction of the 425 cid nailhead. Perhaps your engine is factory. What month is on the cowl tag?
The 1958-69 Buick parts master catalog shows it to be a Carter AFB 3578A; - there is no listing for the Rochester 4GC for the 425. The funny thing is the listing is for a 1962, 1963 is the only year that isn't listed, so I'm assuming it'll be the same as 1962. In 1964 they used a different transmission, so the throttle linkage is going to be slightly different. So there's a very good chance that it's an AFB; - that said, anything from 1961-1963 will probably physically fit as long as it came off a nailhead engine. Then it's just a matter of jetting and tuning. As stated, the 64 and later had a different switch-pitch linkage that is not on the 63 edition, which had a stator control instead.

There are minor differences between automatic vs manual trans, and 49 state vs Calif carbs. And very minor differences in jetting and choke tuning.
Mark, you're in major snow country all the way up there. Closest I got in my travels would have been Dawson Creek. How soon do you need a carbie? If you have trouble getting one out of US I'll have one available in a few months, ex NZ.
As most of us know AFB's are ALL basically the same. Where they differ mostly is in idle jet sizes & idle air bleeds which are not as readily changeable as jets & metering rods. Also the primary throttle shafts between diff. trans. types & yrs. Tom T.

Actually made it all the way up to Dawson, crossed the Klondike on a barge, then on to Tok, AK via the Top of the World Highway. Hardly a highway tho, the old 22' Lazy Daze took it all in her stride.
Lived in Whitehorse for almost a year when I was a kid. Been meaning to go back and see more of the country. I'll make it there one of these years!

Always good to hear about a fellow member! One of my local suppliers quoted me 235$ plus 64$ core for a rebuilt. he has a listing for the carb I need. I gave him the go ahead to see if he can get it. With customs and shipping I'm guessing it's probably my best bet. Thanks to every one that helped with the information I needed!
