Hello V8 Buick peeps, I found out the chirp in my new lark is a crack in a manifold in the left side. Do you think I can find another one or is headers the next direction? Let me know if a pic is necessarry to get to the bottom of it. Thank you, Colby~
Colby, finding a used replacement in good shape might not be too difficult, but then again you haven't told us what year or engine we're talking about here. Devon
Hi Devon, So very sorry. I thought of that as I posted. I bought a 64 Buick Skylark. A used one in good condition would be wonderful!! Colby~
No worries Colby, start a post in "parts wanted", write about the problem and exactly which year/engine/model you're working on and which manifold you need. You might get some quick feedback, you never know. In the meantime you can research repair, maybe start a post on "the bench". If you tell folks where you live, someone may be able to refer you to a shop that does a good job at cast iron repair. Devon
Thank you so much Devon. I hit up the wanted area. I am off to "the bench" to see if someone can fix the crack in a place near me. I appreciate all your help. I should be freaking out... but for some reason I feel really comfortable that I can get it taken care of here with you all. Woo hoo!! Colby~
I attached pics of my craked one. Thanks for the ebay tip. I think I found one...Is this the correct one? And is it in good enough shape to consider buying? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1961...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c1af3379b
Hi hwprouty, There is definitely a crack in mine. It is toward the middle back. I put up the pics of my broken one in case I was not describing it well. I was hoping the link to the other manifold on ebay was a good one that was not cracked.
Thanks hwprouty, It is the wrong size... and yes it does look a little bruised. I am off to find another one. For a what I think is a 300 in my new Lark. I appreciate your input. Good looking out! Colby~
You can weld that one.... just heat it up good and hot before trying.... and then let it cool very slowly.... weld it with a cast iron rod or stainless steel rod....it will hold very well if done right... check with your local vo-tech welding class instructor...most times they will do it for free...
That's a great idea, Doc!:TU: If you take it to a vocational school, I would encourage you to donate a few bucks for the classroom supplies (welding rods, gas, gloves , helmets, etc.)
I just had mine done, it depends on the quality of the cast. Mine was arc welded with a nickel rod because it was pourus. He did try it with the cast rod and said within seconds of striking it he saw this wasn't going to work.
:TU: When I was in high school, we funded the welding shop by cutting up 55 gallon drums and adding legs to make them into BBQ pits. Our shop teacher would let us build anything, as long as we had or made a scale drawing of the project. Fun times, those.
Got it Colby, I thought the picture was of the one you were looking at buying! Have you figured this out yet?
Thank you for checking back in Ya mine is cracked, and the first manifold was too small. I did find one. I got my shop manual from Faxon, and confirmed that I had a 300. I will hopefully be able to contact someone from here that had one and have it shipped. Thank you everyone!! Colby~
