I have heard great things about the adjustable Vacume advance kit. I installed the two silver springs and set the initial timing to 12 deg. with the vacume disconected and plugged. It is adjusted all the way clockwise, so I should slowly turn it out? It runs much better and smoother already Anyone have any tips on how to get the best power and throtle response. I didn't know how to install the total advance plate, the directions seemed vague. There is a 2bb on now but a 4bb intake is waiting for the rochester carb to be rebuilt. Any help would be great.
Sean, Do a search on posts by "Larry70GS" using keywords like "crane" "advance" timing" etc. or just do a search of all posts by Larry. He is a wealth of info on this kit and timing and tuning in general!
This is the way Crane does it.... every time you change the amount of vacuum advance you have to change the initial timing, and the relation between the rotor and cap is altered (i don't know the tec. name for it) Lars
And this is the right/better way to do it. :Smarty: I got the pix. from "Ignitionman" Dave Ray...:TU: http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com/ this way, The Ignitionmans way non of the "bad" things mentioned earlier is precent. Lars :Comp:
With the limiter plate in place, start with 10* vacuum advance. Connect to full manifold vacuum and go for a test drive. If ping, detonation can be heard at part throttle, reduce one click/notch on the the limiter plate(make the movement shorter), you now got 8* vacuum advance... repeat test... if ping, detonation still is precent, start adjusting the vacuum advance unit two (2) turns at the time "counter clockwise" until ping, detonation is eliminated ! Lars :Comp:
So I should stay at 12 deg initial? I understand how the plate works now. I am using the two silver springs now, what are you guy's using on your hei systems?
You want 32* total mecanical advance....:Smarty: (without the vacuum advance hose conected) All in as son as possible without ping/detonation! When you reach them 32* you can check what initial timing you got, to use it as a guide line in the future. :TU: You must tune one thing at the time, FIRST the all in mecanical advance and after that continue with the vacuum advance tuning Lars
I haven't finished tuning the timing, but I changed to a different 2bb carb today and it made a world of a difference. I am on my way now!
