I recently aquired a spare 455 crank and don't know its history. If I remember correctly all BBB cranks are identical and the "N" crank is the preferred choice. This one is not an "N". Where they all the same and some not casted with the letter? Maybe different foundries? o No: Bill
They are the same. All cranks where Nitrated~ thus the "N". The only real difference is minor oil mods need to be done on the earlier blocks. Don't worry, I run a crank with out the "N". Kelly.
Kelly, Thanks for the info. I had always heard that the "N" stood for Nodular Iron and not nitrated? Bill
Sorry, I slipped on that typo  Can't even blame it on being late at night! Either way, you understood what I meant~ they are all the same. I must have been thinking about my crank, it was nitrated while it was at the crank shop. Kelly.
Yes, all the big block cranks are nodular. The reason why the late model cranks do not have the "N" is because the source foundry for that generation only did nodular pieces. The earlier cranks needed to be labeled because the foundry back then did cranks for other applications that were not Nodular, it was mostly for the foundry's benefit to decipher. Dave
