He certainly was one of the more colorful match racers back then. Hayden Profitt was another one.

Just saw Grumpy Jenkins at B/J where his 74 Vega Prostocker brought $400k.

Check out Dandy Dick shifting his Challenger at the 71 Springnationals. Guy had a spring loaded left leg.

    God speed Dick Landy:3gears:

He was certainly no slouch with the shifter , his shifts sounded much like an automatic

OK, got the year wrong, got the bid price wrong, it was B/J auction wasn't it?

1970, 1974...this new model stuff is confusing to me.

Think I got the cigar part right. Urban legend is he got it from Bill Clinton. :Brow:

Should have seen us on three on a tree cars. Brian and Pegleg know about that. Can't tell you how many trannies I went through until I learned how to do it right. Some cars never were meant to be speed shifted.

How about three on the tree with overdrive?

Ok Dave I booked for the Olds Nationals in BG just to reunite the Black 66 with yours. The place is almost sold out so you had better jump. I had to go across to the Best Western.

Someone said Dick Miller or Mandello rented the BG track for fun and games. The Olds show must be up at the Holiday in lot around the airport. I am not sure but the show part is not at the track.

Come on down. Buicklawyer and I want to show you how we trained Ronnie Sox to shift a 4 speed ( and blow the side case out on a Muncie)

I'm certainly going to try, but there's a wedding and extended family reunion in Vermont right through the middle of July. (Wedding date is fixed, reunion is not settled yet. May end up missing both OCA AND Dick Miller. Figures. Last year there was nothing in July, this year there's nothing in August.

You probably recall Hursts advertising slogan: "Shift as hard as you want but don't break your arm". I destroyed two Hurst shifters in 1968.

First was in my B/MP Valiant doing some "shhhh.....street racing". Not sure why, but after a good run, all I had was 3rd and 4th, no 1-2 or reverse. Fortnately able to get it home. Dave Landredth of Hurst (VP in charge of the promo programs with the Hurst Hairy and others, who also had the Olds account at the peak, asked me to bring it in and gave me a complete new aftermarket setup, but wanted the old one back. He also wanted to see the car, so I drove it in one day (to Olds Engineering) and he just smiled and shook his head. It was a beast.

Other one happened on the Ramrod in the first month I had it (also in a "street" race. I snapped the factory lower mounting bolt on the 1-2 shift. Fortunately no other damage. Changed to grade 8 bolts in a hurry.

Olds was going broke covering warranty back then on 4 speeds and rear ends in the big 442's. They designed and manufactured their own 12 bolt to replace the Pontiac 8.2, and I was given the project to do a feasibility study to see if a Ford top loader would work in the car with no other changes. Sadly it wouldn't, but we built one prototype anyway out of an engineering test mule.

OOPS, sorry for the highjack, Casey. As you know, I get carried away. Those were some really great times.

    Dave,
I had a '65 Goat with 4 speed issues. Brand new Muncie. Barf!
Might just have possibly been an "operator error" but I certainly didn't explain that to the dealer. wound up with a new gear box. Good thing,I could just barely make the car payments.
Also broke a Ford Top loader behind a big block mustang, it could be done. Had to fix that one myself.
    Pegleg.
