Does anyone know what years the decklid spoiler was an option on a GS?

    Thanks,
    Rich

Not counting a GSX, for A bodies, I believe that leaves the 71 and 72 model years. If you count the GSX I think the correct answer is 70,71 and 72.

IIRC rear spoiler part of GSX package...so "technically" just '71 - '72...and not for convertibles. To be really confusing, front spoiler and hood tach weren't part of GSX package and were convertible options:eek2:

I am going to put the rear spoiler on my convertible clone anyhow:bla:

Sorry for the breach of etiquette, but "I" like the look:TU:

    As far as GSs,
To be completely accurate the rear spoilers were only available on 71-72 GS coupe's that were made in Flint.

The option was not available at any other production plant.

Me too...never understood why wasn't option for GS convertible...would have one if goal weren't "as original as practical"...

For one you would not be able to use the same spoiler in the sense that the base would be different. You will have to modify the hardtop stock spoiler base in order for it to mount correctly on a convert.

So, if you ordered a car with a rear spoiler, it was automatically built in Flint? Wouldn't where the car was being built be transparent to the dealer or person ordering the car?

I am not sure what you are asking but will give an example of how it would have worked.

Lets say you were ordering a brand new 71 or 72 GS in the Philadelphia area.

Now the production plant assigned to this area would have been Framingham, Mass. so the car would have been built there. (GM did this to lessen logistic/shipping charges for both parts and vehicles.)

Now if you ordered the same car and wanted to get an optional rear spoiler, front spoiler, or hood tack on the car it would have been built at Flint, Mi. and shipped to the Philadelphia area. The same would have happened if you bought a GSX, as they were only available from Flint.

This probably upped the destination charges but so be it.

The customer would probably not know it came from Flint, and wouldn't have cared. When people look at new cars do you think they notice or care which assembly line built the car?

The only point to all of this is if someone is selling a 71-72 GS with any of the GSX optional pieces listed above and it was built at a plant other then Flint, then the car did not come that way from the factory.

    duane;
    curious-
any idea how the canadian market would be divied as to what plant would supply an ordered GS? i believe that skylarks were probably built in oshawa.
my gs was built in fremont and shipped to alberta. if an order was placed in ontario for a gs , would flint supply the car?

    Gerry,
I think the last a-body buicks built in Oshawa were 70's, and for 71 the plant was switched over to the big cars.

So if you lived in Ontario and bought a 70 it would have come from Oshawa, but a 71 or 72 would have come from Flint.

For the 70-72 a-bodies sold in the states the "home" production plants ran something like this

Framingham Mass (North/east coast cars down towards the Carolinas)

Flint Mi. (Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia-Florida thru to texas)

Fremont, Ca. (Calif, Nevada, Utah, west coast of Canada)

Leeds, Mo. (I believe 70 only, States in the middle.) (I have little info about these cars.)

I did a short article about Plant Logistics showing "home" plant ranges for both car sales and parts suppliers for the BPG newsletter.

One of the interesting things shown was about where different glass suppliers were used, ie
    DCL (Duplate Canada Limited)
    PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass)
    LOF (Libby-Owens-Ford)

...convertibles?...my understanding GS were Flint only...

OK:TU: ...knew there were differences related to top well, but since decklid/quarter extension same, figured at rear edge all same and spoiler would fit..."slope" must be off enough to require spoiler mod...explaining why Buick didn't bother...considering overall GS production and ultimately convertibles (10%) within that...

On a related topic; I purchased a fiberglass rear spoiler from Tamraz and had it painted with the car. The fiberglass seems to be a perfect match and it is super light. I bought stainless mounting studs from the hardware store. I just wasn't pleased with the ones it came with. Measure (10 times) and drill. I should have mounted it before paint! I would have been less nervous.
