    Biill look on the axle housing itself, passenger side just outboard of the hogshead at the 1 to 2 o'clock postion when viewed from the rear wheel, passenger side. Those are the numbers neeeded.

    axle ID

    Just as Jim said,

    all axle ID codes ard stamped on the axle tube on the right hand or passenger side,either on front or top of the tube.

    1st grouping 2 letters or digits of the code = ratio
    2nd grouping of 1 letter or digit = manufacturer identity
    3rd grouping of digits = day of year axle built
    4th grouping of 1 letter = production shift D=day, N=night
    later models
    5th grouping if any = G80 or limited slip option.

    SG B 218 D

    SG = 71/2 w/2.73 ratio
    B = Buick
    218 = 21st day of "78"
    D = day shift

    You sure on this one?

    "218 = 21st day of "78"
    218 I thought would have been the 218 day of the calender year. On my 71
    P-O-P, it has 236 (which is about 2 weeks before my 09A body build date)and the 71 asm manual calls out for the P-O-P to be marked with the day the rear was assembled. :bglasses:

    Anyway, what year are you talking about, because things did change? :Do No:

    In my Buick catalog

    "OK" is a 293 peg leg for the 70 model year.

    Dan, you're correct, its the julian date.
    which proves I shouldn't talk, look up parts on a 78 truck and type on this board at the same time. I stand corrected.
