generally i know how to decode stuff, but one number has got me confused on this one. Can some Q-jet Gurus chime in? Its a chevy style carb, where the fuel line port is at the front facing passenger side of engine. As i read it. 1708 1282 2730 DKD Top to Bottom, left to right; 1708---> Later series 1980s 1----> Year produced, in this case 1= 1981 2 ---> Quadrajet (4 bbl) Federal standards 8 ----> ??????? I thought it may be a 3, for cadillac, but i posted a pic, judge for yourself. 2----> EVEN NUMBER meaning Auto Trans. 273 ---> 273rd day of the year 0---> Year DKD---> Production Plant Code
Thanks Jim, what do you mean by OP 64-7160? Was gonna order a rebuild kit for it, just thought id make sure!
Man you sure want to rebuild that nasty smog carburetor? You can buy a core cheap, and just rebuild that. (If you are rebuilding your truck's carb, please disregard this post) :error: ou:
Actually id love some advice on what to build. I know these are cheap, and ive picked up a few tricks to make them reliable and quick. I was just enthusiastic about this one cuz it ran nice when the engine was in the car. How do you know its smog? And whats a better year range for a carb? Gonna be going on a bored over 350 (chev, sorry).
You will be fine with a carb coded from 1971- back. Since you are building a Chevy, though, anything will be fine... just kidding.
I did not want to start a topic like this over, but I have a question, when you find out all the info like I did on mine, and like you all did here.. How do you know the CFMs or how can you find them out? here is my numbers.. 7042240 MB 2241 & 7042240 MB 2171 Both of these are 72 Buick 455 Auto trans carbs... how to find the CFMs.. any help would be great..
I think the q-jets were all rated at 750-795 cfms. The primaries arent that big, only around 200 or so, but the secondaires more than make up for it. Its really a variable cfm carb, it will only give the engine what it asks for, which is why its such a versatile carb.
Just to add some more info, following 71, some of the other GM divisions had 800 cfm Q-jets on their big blocks too. Otherwise, all Q-jets are 750 cfm. No mysterys...
