I always laugh at the different laws from place to place. I shoot black powder as a hobby, something else to tinker with. It blows me away that a 22 magnum is legal somewhere, but here in Indiana, I can't hunt with my replica Colt 1st model Dragoon. A 22 magnum will get it done, but a 200 grain conical on top of 45 grains of 3f wouldn't? I can go for 50 under a ball...energy comes out about equal to a .357, which is perfectly legal. I wouldn't recommend everybody try it, but anyone with experience and practice could get it done no problem. I'm paper plate or soda jug accurate to 40-50 yards with it, I think it'd be a rewarding experience. Oh well
.22 cal has been allowed for a few years here now. My dad (83 yrs old) uses a 22-250. Much better shot. I am in the middle of the woods. There are a few lanes where I can reach out to 200 or so yards, but some pretty thick stuff as well. I use a 300 Win. mag for bustin brush and reachin out.
As a child Dad would shoot deer in the back yard and catch steelhead in the front. Restoring his hand me down 30-30 right now, Circa 1947. Hopefully I shoot me a deer with it one day like Grandpa, Dad and one or two of my brothers did, gun could tell some stories. Nice Buck.
For a brush gun you can’t beat a 30-30 or 44mag. Oddly there is no 30-30 ammo or 44 mag ammo on the shelves that last few months I’ve looked. But there is a a ton of 223/556 9mm 762 45 etc
Are you able to find 300 win mag ammo. That’s another one. There is a bunch of guns on the shelve but no ammo to walk out with your purchase. How do you like the 300 win mag?
I can’t imagine seeing one like yours from the stand. It would be hard for me to compose myself for the shot. Very nice, sir!
Reloading makes scarcity a non issue as long as you have plenty of the base components. I'm good for the next hundred years or so.
I find it from time to time here in so Indiana, not sure about the other posters. It's only been legal to hunt with for a handful of years here, and really it's more than you need, so there doesn't seem to be a great demand here. Maybe different if we had some elk or something. I don't mind the recoil, but I'm a good sized guy. My push feed Winchester 70 is fairly heavy, and has a limbsaver pad on it, and I could shoot a whole box if my wallet felt like it. The 150 gr factory loads are pretty much a point and shoot from 0-300 yards, +/- a few inches, and that's plenty of bullet for a deer. I take that and raise you .300 RUM. The price of brass is what I get for HAVING TO HAVE the absolute most over the top .30 cal to build a 'for fun' target gun out of. And brass do I buy, because it does not have a long life....a 200 gr eld-x on 91 grains of retumbo is what it's shot best so far...
We used to enjoy fresh venison from my brother-in-law each year, just pay for gas and tag. In 2017, my eldest son William was driving his youngest brother Mathew to Edmonton for Will's birthday when they hit a moose on Highway 2 (Queen Elizabeth II highway). Mathew was killed instantly and William was slightly injured. Today is the anniversary of Mathew's passing. Since that day though, we have been unable to eat wild meat. I still wish the best luck to all hunters out there. Good luck and good, safe hunting.
It was a very long 2 days in the stand. A front was moving in, and the weather was absolutely miserable. Here are a couple of pictures from the camera the day before. Talk about get your blood pumping! I about chit myself! I had been watching this deer for 4 or 5 years, adding mass each year. He made no early appearances like he usually did, so I thought he was gone, but he finally came out of hiding during late muzzleloader. The second drop tine was a "new feature" from the previous year.
Sad story, we’ve had lots of close calls with moose around BC and Alberta. I’ve personally hit two big deer but the moose...
Sorry to hear about Mathew. We have known of several people here that have been killed or severely injured from moose, bear ,and deer accidents. Without the wildlife management I can't even imagine how bad it would be. Be safe folks. This is the first cool day weather wise here during the season.,27 Time to go watch the sun come up over the field
Only problem I have had with finding 300 Mag ammo was finding the brand I like to shoot. Usually just means I get some when I see it and not wait till just before season. The 300 followed my dad from Alaska. Where it covered pretty much all the game and terrain used in. Sometimes thought of as too small. Like real thick Grizzly country. I like it because like said ealier, it is a point and shoot up to 300+ yards. Not that I have the 300yrd lanes, it is nice to know I have it if I need it.
I got a big 9/10 point buck today with crossbow. After dragging for 5 hours through swamp, I might call it a 10 pointer.
This big buck walked out of the sticks and laid down 200 yards out. I used my binoculars with my phone for this picture. 45 minutes later he got up to check out another smaller buck and walked within 150 yards for a clear shot with a Remington 7mm
