While doing some alternator work on the 430 I found I have a Delco Remy 1100774 55A date code 8G18 alternator. I've heard these original alternators can be worth keeping. What are your opinions? Keep it and restore or replace?

I'm currently trouble shooting the alternator light being on, but I'm still charging. I think the alternator is fine, but the voltage regulator is bad. This alternator looks to have a "10DN to single wire conversion" voltage regulator installed on the alternator.

Either which way you decide to go I would keep it. Hard to find correct date code ones.

I have this alternator on my 1969 Buick Riviera GS 430 also. Did you find any additional info about it? I am looking to rebuild mine.

    That's a July 18th, 1968 date code.

Anyone with a very early build 1969 would want that if they were concerned about date code correctness.

"Stellar" here on the board has rebuilt a few for me the past couple years back to concours correct. They look and function as new.

I definitely wouldn't discard it as I'm sure someone may need it.

Here's one he did for me:

I know of two types of regulators that mount to the alternator. Often they are called one wire , but technicaly they are not. One plugs into the alt with 3 wires A battery wire , a ground wire, and a light wire. The other mounts to an alternator through bolt and sits on the side of the alt and has a short 2 wire lead with a plug in connection and the hot, ground and light wire. Since it is really an external mounted regulator the alternator is still original inside. They do eliminate the wiring to the old fender mounted regulator and the regulator. Put up a pic of the reg on your alternator. A lot of guys used to carry one in the glove box for an emergency road side fix.

Looks like the only difference in our codes is the date:
