I found this the other day. I don't know if the Old's boys have seen this still very cool. Dick looks like he was a very good driver. As a kid I remmember my parents watched this show all the time. Plus Linda Vaugh was one of the hottest chicks of her time.

   That IS the way we drove them back then. Dave Rench watched me one time at Martin when my Ramrod bogged and i got pissed at it... said I almost ripped it out of the floor...YUP. That's the way to drive them. I broke the rear 3/8 mounting bolt on the shifter in a street race one time when it was new. Fortunately it went into second and not another gear...I kept the clutch in and coasted it down. No other damage...drove it home in 2nd gear.

"...turning in a ten second performance.....".....LOL.LOL.LOL.LOL.

That particular run was in the high 14's, low 15's. He bogged it off the line launching it too low and it bit too hard. Nice shifting, though. The shifters from the factory were the same as the aftermarket, but didn't have the adjustable stops and had a slip in handle rather than the bolt on or welded one. Those were always changed to the aftermarket ones in the race cars....The car would run high 12's easy (and did) with a drag racer at the wheel.

That car also was updated in our engineering garage with a 69 front clip for the 1968 Nationals. It was the only "69" HT with vent windows...LOL..Fun to work there then...here's the same car a few weeks later:

Dave, is it my imagination, or are those 15" factory SS-II wheels on the Smothers car? Perhaps '69 Hurst/Olds wheels repainted?

Those are indeed 69 Hurst wheels, but not painted. That's the way we received them from Motor Wheel and painted them in our wheel and tire room paint booth. Interesting that they're not Hurst wheels.....car behind it (which I think was the big block car) had Cragars, also not Hurst wheels...

Maybe because those cars weren't really "owned" by Hurst....LOL.LOL. :bglasses:

Waaaay cool vid, Jim. Thanks for posting. And yes, Linda Vaughn was definitely hot stuff back in the day. I saw her this past summer in the Woodward Dream Cruise parade and she STILL looked pretty good. :beers2:

We walked up to Linda Vaughn talking to Jungle Pam at a big drag meet at Motor City Dragway in summer 1966 (pre silicone)...My girlfriend at the time was no slouch herself, but all she could say was "Ohmigod!" LOL..

There was a Mustang driver in NMCA from Canada named Barry Poole that was a phenomenal shifter...what a sweet driver...:bglasses:

I'm surprised he hasn't surfaced at Pure Stock...he was unbeatable...

I saw Barry Poole race at the 1991 Supercar Showdown in Youngstown, Ohio. I was 16 and went with my mom, dad, brother, uncle (who video-taped the event for us) my aunt, and cousin. Barry can sure work a 4-speed!
