I was talking with a guy I work with the other day who bought a brand new 1966 375 horse 4 gear Chevelle and the best pass he could get stock was 13.30 at Detroit dragway. It made me think if any of these cars ever left the factory or any original owners ever ran a true sub 13 pass in pure stock form. I know the advertisements of the lifthood hood runner that Ronnie Sox drove but that car was warmed over and tweaked. I have talked to many original owners of some of these cars and various other brands and none of them ever got in the 12's on stock tires out of the box. I am not including factroy race cars like light weight Darts, Swiss cheese poncho's and other such cars. I am talking a factory built and availble readily optioned cars. Ls6 chevelles, L88 vettes, Hemi cudas etc. I am curious if any of you guys know anyone. I will include fine tuning, carb jetting, timing, and distributer curving. I am not an expert I was just wondering if any proof exists.:Do No:

I'd put money on the L88 Vette running 12s on street tires bone stock.....but not many were made so it doesn't really count IMO.

My stock 2001 Vette with an A4 runs:

    0 - 60: 5.1 sec
    Standing 1/4: 13.5 @ 104

And it gets 29MPG on a cruise. Let the mods begin.

I think the times on these cars would have been better if they had the tires we have today . Those old bias ply tires couldn't hook up.

In 1965-1966 I saw a 66 427/425 Vette do a 12.8, 112-114mph smoking the tires way down the track. This was at the now defunct Sanford dragstrip in Sanford, NC.

The owner, Eddie Coleman, is still living here locally. The car was new and as I recall this was the first time it was run. In April 1966 he totalled it going to the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, NC. He then bought a 67 427/435 Vette and totalled it going back to the Azalea Festival in April, 1967.

    Agreed.

I've had G70 x 14 Polyglas on my Ramrod since 1969. The new repops we put on in 2000 are night and day better for traction than the other sets I've been through on that car. One of the old ones is still the spare and is as hard as a distributor cap. They still pull hard with a controlled spin. Could never do that with the old Polyglas, at least on this car. It was all over the road.

A friend of mine runs a 69 Firebird in the FAST series with new bias ply red lines. He runs low 11's and pulls the left wheel off the ground. The new is definitely better then the old.

I would agree that the rubber compound today is much better than it was 40 years ago. I have a friend who has an original set of polyglass tires from 1970 they are N.O.S and have been properly stored they are like cement bricks compared to the ones from today. I also think the drag strips are prepped much better. Plus not many people tried to science out there totally stock muscle cars. They usally added bigger tires, headers etc.

If you ever read the Shelby Cobra World Registry, you find alot of that stuff. Many of the 427 Cobras were wrecked early on. The majority of them read some thing like "Hit bridge abutment Dec 1967, 2 killed" The entries go on and on. Always 2 killed for some reason.

As a side note, after these cars were totaled, VIN stamped pieces of them got scattered. So 3 or 4 people build the same serial number Cobra from VIN stamped parts. So you see alot of "VIN in dispute" in the entries.

I have a Hot Cars magazine from 1970 that has a stock Stage 1 4 speed (Tom Rix's car) running 12.80's with the addition of a set of headers and a pair of 14" slicks

In 68, the Azalea festival coincided with the June bug festival

A buddy of mine in the day ran 13.15 with a pure stock 69 Cyclone CJ with a 4 speed.A lighter car would have helped some maybee enough. He was so happy for me when I went 12.74 in NMCA pure stock in 1992.I bet with todays tires he would hit a 12.99 or better back then.
