I have a question about the '70 paint color called Diplomat Blue. I have never been able to see this color in person and the paint "chips" on line don't seem to help, either. Is this color a metallic? If 'yes', is it relatively low content metallic? Or, high metallic? Thanks. Ken
I have a 71 that may be diplomat blue. It's not stratomist blue, but frankly I have a hard time telling between the colors with my eyes. Stratomist is a little darker. Actually, I may be using the corvette name but there are two Buick blue matallic colors that are almost the same. They're both metallic. Here's what I think diplomat blue is, on my car.
Mike, That is not Diplomat Blue. It looks like Cascade Blue, a 1971 only color. Diplomat Blue is a very dark blue color and, I think, one of the best colors that was available on GS's. I has a fair amount of metallic content and does sparkle in bright sunlight. This can be adjusted to taste by your paiint supplier. A very good choice IMHO.
Brad, I get the blue names confused. I guess I'll have to go look at the cowl tag and look it up. I thought Stratomist was the darker one and diplomat was the lighter one. Cascade is another one. Too many to remember.
I just went through my 1971 Buick color charts and there were three exterior blues available that year; Cascade blue was the light blue (code D), Stratomist blue was the medium blue (code B), and Nocturn blue was the dark blue (code E). The GS hood that I added to my car was originally Stratomist blue.
Mikes car sure looks like strato blue to me. There is a real nice ad from 70 of a diplomat blue car. It is a stage-1 and has a guy next to car with a racing helmet under his arm.
There is a possibility that there are pictures from the Rocky Mountain GS Car Show up in the nest couple of days. There were several blue cars there. One Stratomist Blue and the other close to Diplomat Blue (a bit darker). My local paint supplier has the codes to mix the paint correctly in the newer paints. Many suppliers can refer you to a paint shop that will paint a "test panel" for you at a minimal cost. I find it a good way to see if you like the color or not.
