Does anyone know this '70 GSX?

Hey guys, if this is not the forum to ask this question would someone please move it to the right place? Thanks!

There is a '70 GSX scheduled for the Mecum Spring auction. The write-up says it's a two time GSCA Nationals winner, #s matching, etc., and claims it has dealer installed Stage II motor components. The care appears to be in great shape. I will be attending the auction and have planned to take a close look at it. Here is a link to the car.

Thing is, this morning I did a search for GSXs on the Mecum site and found that this very same car was sold last June at the Mecum Denver auction for $115,000, which I am thinking is quite cheap for a GSX Stage 1? The write-up said it was...FROM THE SHANE AULICK COLLECTION.

Does anyone know this car? Is there any reason I should steer clear of it? I'm no GSX expert, you guys are. But I have seen them go for quite a bit more than $115,000. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks guys,

    Steve

Odd that it does not have Stage 2 heads being they are putting a lot into the fact its optioned as a Stage 2. It does not say if the Carb and Dist are Stage 1 correct only says it has the numbers matching block.

I can't figure out how to edit the post. Let me say. They don't SAY anything about stage 2 heads

It has the Holley for a Stage 2 and not the stage 1 carb. Looking under the hood, there are some things that are not correct, but they could be fixed. The main ingredient to the stage 2 package, the special heads, are MIA. I would ask to see the paperwork backing the claim to the dealer installed package. When this car was sold new, the stage 2 [head] package for this car was not yet available. Check with others to confirm this.

I saw this car at the Denver auction and Jim is spot on - no Stage 2 heads, etc. but I do believe it to be a true GSX that needs some minor things corrected.

The stage 2 package was available over the counter,, minus the heads, as far back as 1969. So it might have had the dealer install stage 2 cam, pistons, bearings, B4B, holley, MT headers, etc.

Gary I was referencing the 455 stage 2 heads not being available for the 70 model year. But you may be right about the rest of the parts.

I would want to change it back to a Stage 1 GSX however, I hear the carb is very rare. Is it me, or does anyone else think the $115,000 gavel price (includes 10% paid to Mecum) is quite low?

Scott, can you tell me what condition the car is in? It looks great in the pictures, but as most of us know, pictures can lie...

I don't think its low. If this was a all numbers matching 4spd then yes I would say its low. Many GSX's have sold in the 100k range.

Steve, overall the car was in nice condition, I recall the underside being painted body color like a Mopar and certainly not correct, but of course anything is fixable. I have several images of the car that I could provide if you send me a PM. When I talked with the owner and discussed the Stage 2 configuration, he was convinced that the car had the stage 2 heads as well, which of course is incorrect. He had confused MT super scavenger headers with the old Kustom units needed for the Stage 2 head. He did say it had the cam, 4:78 rear, stage one carb, B4B, etc. that would have been available in early 1970. I believe this car was also owned previously by one of John Force's crew chiefs. I think the sale price reflected a decent stage one GSX that needs a few things corrected here or there. Don't recall of the top of my head weather the stripes were gloss or semi gloss.

Oh, and I believe the hoped for number from the seller was like $165k or something like that - closer to what a true stage 2 head car would be.

Thanks Scott. I talked to Mecum yesterday and he has pre-determined the "selling price" at $150,000 to $175,000. Hoping for a big pay day, but then, aren't we all? :) If the car was all sorted out it might be worth that. He claims it to be a #s matching drive train, but too many questions about the Stage II components for my liking...

Can someone tell me how to use the PM? I have never used that feature, and have no idea how it's done. Thanks!
