I'm looking at a supposed '70 GS Stage 1 in rough condition. The VIN matches the block and the block is SS code. The cowl tag is missing. The distributor is a 1112016 and the carb is gone. It has factory chrome valve covers and two WG wheels. I can't get to the trans tag or rear end because it's in the grass. Thoughts on the VIN?? That's the best pic I have of the VIN and rivet.
No, that's correct, the VIN tag was riveted in from the bottom. I have seen the the actual tag both on top, and under the tabs that hold it in the dash.
I guess with it being gone it just raised suspicion in my mind. I started thinking re-body, fake stampings etc.
Sorry jims right upside down on flint built cars check to see if the Vin tag sticker is on the driver side door you could possibly see the Build date if so get in touch with the Sloan museum or Wayne Roberts GS historical society to verify it's a real stage one
I looked at the car once and was able to match the block VIN to the VIN on the dash and verify the SS on the block and the distributor numbers, but was not able to get any pics at that time. I will try to get some pics soon. Blue car with blue interior, auto on the column, buckets and short console. Missing hood, air cleaner and carb. Correct shroud is there. Owner is trying to find the title and hopefully I can drag it home.
That VIN is for a pretty late build, probably late May or even early June 1970, so invoice info would need to be acquired from Wayne Roberts. Nice thing is that all information from the documents will allow a reproduction trim tag to be made, including the body number. Typically, the build date will be about 2 weeks prior to the invoice date, but there are exceptions.
Got it to the garage. It is really rough. 3.42 rear (no sway bar), BB trans, no factory tach (clock only) non tilt wheel, radio missing, PS, PB and AC. Spent all day today cleaning it out. Got two extra 1233000 shrouds with it in usable condition.
