I am looking for a cheap way to switch my front drum brakes to disk brakes on my 1966 skylark. First of all, are there any good late model cars that have a spindel that would work. If not has anyone here tried to maybe put an all new front suspension on it (new upper and lower arms with a new spindle)? I just don't have the amount of money to be spending on a kit, but from what kind of response ive been getting elsewhere that may be the only way to go about it. If anyone's done a conversion before please respond.
I did my '70 with junkyard parts. Sorry, can't help with what will fit your year car. If you don't get any advice on the web, ask a few junkyards - they'll consult the interchange manual. Thats how I did it. I got the spindles, power booster, and metering valve from the junkyard - and the bearings, flex-lines, calipers, rotor, and master cylinder (everything else) from a parts store. (Well, one of the rotors from the junkyard had more meat than the parts store, so I kept that one and had it turned.)
Your in the wrong forum look in the whoa and the sway forum good information in there, any gm A-body disc brake set up will work from 70-72 model years: skylark, cutlass, chevelle, monte carlo............
Good point on forum. My swap was done years ago - I forget the cost. Probably around $100. I do remember being told that some A-body hardware earlier than 70 would work, but only specific cars. I forget which ones. I've never had that confirmed, though.
disk brakes from what i have found online for my 65special(same as skylark) is 70-81 camaro/firebird brakes or b body gm(impala/caprice or similar) is the choice and use newer 1LE rotor from newr camaro/firebird(metric stud though) newer g body(monte, grand prix, regal, cutlass and 2 wheeldrive s-10)79-88 with 79-80 rotors(standard stud size) spindles and rotors from 78 wont work for any of these swaps you will need newer style ball joints lower will have to be aquired from specialty place as they would need to be machine dowm slightly to fit your 65 lower control arm. custom upper arms can be purchased for correct angles ,you could try offset shaft bushing on upper arms but i think they go the opposite way then what they where meant for.(not sure)you might have to change tie rods ,but Baer has a nice adjustable setup you can get that will help bumpsteer which is common after this kind upgrade.you will need a proportioning valve and master for this. somewhere on this board someone listed the right brake booster part # and where to get. also most of these cars the front swap bar will fit and should be a big upgrade than stock. good luck andy
